Without Faith It Is Impossible....
Mansfield's look at George W. Bush's innerspace reveals a man who has been given much and of whom much is expected. The 'call' on his life has obviously led GW to a more intimate religious life than that expressed by previous Presidents' including that of his own father. GW, like many others, especially in his younger years, skirted Christianity, viewing it as a belief system that provided wholesome, family-oriented, morality and something that was like a life preserver on a ship; one could throw it out when there was some sort of a crisis. What GW found out, that his religious beliefs were untried for much of his life. He appeared to be like many citizens who passively viewed the gradual decline in morality with its permissiveness, pornography, rejection of authority, a demise of the family, and abortion, to name a few. Alcohol was a personal issue that he knew he must overcome. The decision to give up alcohol was a major turning point in GW's life. At some point in GW's life, his heritage and his platonic Christian spirituality collided, and he made a decision to 'go with God.' In the Oval Office he once said: 'You know, I had a drinking problem. Right now I should be in a bar in Texas, not the Oval Office. There is only one reason that I am in the Oval Office and not in a bar. I found faith. I found God. I am here because of the power of prayer. The book is the story of a man coming to find his place in the life God planned for him. It will not interest the non-believer, whether it be the political or the religious. It will interest the person who relies on faith...for 'without faith it is impossible...' Reaching for God or reaching for a goal...faith is an ingredient that is necessary. Mansfield did a great job of showing how faith functioned in the life of a governor of Texas who became the President of the United States. It can inspire you, if you are open and if you believe in 'faith.'
