This is the first book of a new series. Starts with Welsh miners in early 20th century and intermission (ends) in the 1920's. The interaction historically is wonderful, the characters are extremely varied and it's amazing how they tie together. Follett goes into great detail of the characters. The book is very instructional on the politics of the era and the various characters are examples of the points of view of the period and how the politics eventually affect them.

This is not a book you can read 5 pages at a time. Chapters are 50 pages. Find a comfortable chair, a good bottle of wine, and plan on a weekend of wonderful reading. If you're a part of a book club, plan on chapter discussions, they will be extremely stimulating.

IF I had a complaint, it's that the book jumps between the characters. I plan on reading the book a second time, a character at a time.

A definite for your Library. You'll want to keep a copy to reread when the second comes out.

If Mr Follet and his publishers are making a profit selling this hardcover at $20, they must be making a killing by charging the same for the e-copy. Too bad they have apparently decided to ream those of us (avid) readers with Nooks and Kindles. I hope this decision costs them money in the long term and they learn from their mistaken assumption that we are willing to be taken advantage of in this manner....

    Okay book

Follett has gotten old and lazy. Not a very good book compared to his earlier writing. Like Pat Conroy, his spark is now dim.

glad I got it from Overdrive and didn't pay for it.

If you like war stories you'll love this book. Otherwise, the families get lost in all the insider WWI details. I tried to like this, really I did, but... towards the middle of this huge book I found myself flipping page, after page, after page just to get by all the battle talk. By the end, I didn't even care what happened to them.

    A So-So Read

This book was no "Pillars of the Earth" or "World without End," both of which I couldn't put down and thoroughly loved. The war scenes were a bit too much (and too long) and I found myself speed reading through them. I didn't really care about the characters ... except maybe for Ethel and her storyline. And by the time Walter and Maud finally lived together as man and wife I didn't even care. I don't care how many pages a book has if it's a great book but I just wanted to read this one as fast as I could and go on to something else. I will probably read the second in this trilogy when it comes out. Not your typical Follett though sad to say ... I much rather enjoyed reading about Prior Phillip, Aliena, Jack Builder, Tom, etc ... now THEY were interesting and 3-dimensional characters.

    No Pillars!!

Just not bowled over on this one. Half way through and had to set it down. Kept waiting for it to come together but lost interest. Found the writing, especially the dialogue, dry. I am sure this will play well on the mini series but it is a klunky read.
