    well-done, though not fantastic....

a sort of alternate socio-technological manifest than his night's dawn, yet sharing literary context with it, fallen dragon is basically a pretty good love story. not without grand implications, it is not ground-shaking, though. worth reading, surely....but, then, after writing NTD, one would have to be burned out on several fronts. still a good show.

    Classic Peter F. Hamilton

There are two time lines in Fallen Dragon. In the first time line we meet Lawrence Newton, a Sargent in Zantiu-Braun¿s Strategic Security Division. Newton is going to Thallspring on an ¿Asset Realization¿ mission - Zantiu-Braun¿s piracy, go and nock over a colonised world and steal any goods of high value. In the second time line we meet a very young Lawrence Newton, a very bright but stroppy kid who is a member of a ¿Board Family¿ - the planetary ruling elite. Young Lawrence wants to fly off exploring the galaxy when he grows up. But the exploration of the galaxy has all but come to an end. As the time lines are revealed we learn of why Lawrence came to finish up as a simple Sargent, and how he hopes to do a little private asset realization of his own. I found the book a compelling read. It has rounded characters and deft use of ideas. Never one to avoid sex in his work Peter Hamilton has liberally added sex to this work, more than in other the works of his that I have read. If you read this book, ask yourself questions. I was asking all the time but I still managed to miss the twist at the end - probably just brain dead again. ;-)

    Another Spectacular Tour de Force!

I couldn't wait for the book to be released here in the States; so, I ordered it from the UK. Wow! Hamilton creates another well envisioned universe where 'hardish' sci-fi blends gracefully with a tales of lives lived on multiple planets. What I've always enjoyed about Hamilton's work is the way he creates plausible worlds and all-too-human characters, whose flaws and desire for redemption remind of me why I read science fiction.
