An excellent collection of poems to read on your own or aloud

I picked up this book because my 2nd grader's class was studying poetry and I was the designated "mystery reader" for one session. The book more than satisfied my desire for a variety of poems that would whet the appetite of students who were just being introduced to the formal study of poetry. Most importantly, the book has been in constant use since then. It will clearly be treasured for years to come.

How much I like this book:

I have had this book since I was a child, many years ago. My mother would read to my siblings and me with such wonderful emotions, antics and body language to emphasize all that she was reading. When my children were born I used the same book that I grew up with to read to them and they loved it! I would use the same antics that my mother used to embellish the poems or stories. When my grandchildren were born I purchased a new edition of the book and also read to them, enjoying the contents all over again, it was fun for them as well as me! I have since purchased it for every baby shower I have attended that includes 19 nieces and nephews and 21 great nieces and nephews. It should be a part of everyone's childhood.

    Wonderful Book for Families!!

This book has something for everyone, of all ages and backgrounds. As a young child my Mother would read poems to us out of this book by candlelight when the lights were out, and at other traditional times. The old copy of this book that was passed down over the years, was coverless and water damaged. We were very excited to find it at Barnes & Noble. Now that we have all grown up, all of us kids have our own copy of the book to read to our children. However, it still brings me joy to read those poems that I knew by heart as a child. My favorite ones are 'Little Orphan Annie' and 'The tale of Custard the Dragon', or 'Casey at the bat'. I highly recommend this book to anyone who reads to their children, or who simply loves poetry.

    Great Collection!

This is an excellent collection of poems. I give this as a baby shower or new baby gift routinely. Nothing like get a baby's library off to a great start! There are poems babies and small children will enjoy, and of course, a wide variety for the whole family.

    A family treasure.

I got a copy of this book from my mother in 1965. She read it to me and I to her. I read it to my daughter, who is now the mother of three. This copy is for her. She is also an elementary special education teacher, I hope she will find it useful in the classroom as well (if there is time between teaching "core subjects". Sadly I don't think poetry figures into standardized testing.). This book has a poem for every day of the year, plus some! Delightful.

    wonderful collection of poems

I bought this book for my grandchildren because after checking the table of contents I found it included all the poems I loved as a child, as well as having a section of poems for adults (or older children which I'm sure includes favorites of mine.My daughter should enjoy it too, and the children when they are older.

Favorite Poems Old & New Selected for Boys & Girls

I received this book as a Chritmas present from an aunt when I was 9 years old, I read it to my children years later, and and am now buying a new edition (ours was lost in a flood) for my first grandchild. Everyone invited to the baby shower has been asked to bring their favorite childhood book to create a "book basket" and this will be my contribution. This anthology is wide-ranging and wonderful, from short, silly poems to long, serious poems that can be cherished at any age.

    great classic poetry

what a great book to read to your children. Brought back memories of my own childhood when it was important to know and love literature. Many classic stories and poems in this book. Thank you Helen!
