Great Cover, Great Title, Great Author - So-So Story Line...

I am a long time romance reader (over 20 years). I am a long time fan of author Katherine Sutcliffe. Out of all the books I have read by KS over the years, this one would fall down the middle ¿ not great but, not awful. Simply a decent try but, nothing memorable unfortunately. Like a few other reviewers, I concur that there was a lot of missing information in this story, poorly explained events and happenings as well as circumstances that were simply out of this world and hard to believe could happen. Many things went over the top (constant and I mean constant references to Juliette¿s aura of beauty and sexuality and Chantz¿ unbelievable charisma and appeal). Many characters contradicted themselves as well ¿ was Juliette¿s mother a saint or a true sinner? KS made her look very bad and then too good to be true, what was she? Juliette¿s father looked to be a good man and then perhaps a bad man possessed by the demons of love. Was he bad or simply misguided? Max and Tylor were mean and hateful ¿ no good seemed to appear in them. There was almost too many obvious references of good versus evil, rich to poor, white to black and so on. I think to make this story much more interesting, the lines between all these things should have been more blurred and not so clear cut. Human actions, human emotions and human desires are rich, full bodied and complicated and clear cut lines are not so easy to see in real life. Like all her books, I always have such high hopes that the characters will blossom in time as will the story line. This book had plenty of potential but, seem scattered and not well developed at times. Because enough parts worked, I gave it 3 stars¿.I would have liked to give it more but, the drawbacks were too many to allow for that. If you have not read her yet, a few top picks by her would be ¿Dream Fever¿, ¿A Fire In The Heart¿ and ¿Shadowplay¿. If you like historical romances loaded with the works ¿ these three will do it for you. These books are heavy on emotions, intensity, sexual sizzle, passion and are well thought out. The characters in these stories will be memorable. A few other books she wrote that are fairly good are ¿Once a Hero¿, ¿Jezebel¿, ¿Devotion¿, ¿My Only Love¿, ¿Miracle¿, ¿Hope and Glory¿, ¿Renegade Love¿ and ¿Desire & Surrender¿. The first three are 4 plus stars ¿ this last batch 3-3 ½ stars. Other books by her are not much worth mentioning and I read them as only to work on completing my collection by her. When KS hits her mark, there are few better than her. When she misses her mark, it stings. Even though this story, ¿Fever¿ was average, this author is worth adding to your collection. i was absolutly ingrossed in this book !! i couldnt put it down !! the love between julie and chantz was deep , passionate , and eternal !! i cant wait to read another of katherine sutcliffe's books !!

Sutcliffe outdoes herself with FEVER. Set during the pre-civil war era admist the sultry backdrop of the sizzling bayou, she weaves a captivating story and a hot and fiery passion. The mixture of all these elements guarantee that readers of this genre won't be disappointed and will find themselves thoroughly engrossed in the lives of the appealing characters and the provocative plot. A definite keeper from one of this genres first-clas

Chantz and Juliette couldn't be more perfect for one another, yet virtually insurmountable conflicts keep them apart as their steamy attraction heats up, burning the pages right out of the book. One nasty secret after another is revealed, threatening their love and very existence. Beautifully crafted, with Fever Ms. Sutcliffe drops you right in the middle of 1850s Louisiana. You feel the stifling heat, see the rising river, hear the insects droning in the night air. I couldn't read the pages fast enough! An excellent story of love, passion, betrayal and triumph. A definite keeper.

Bayou planter Jack Brussard fell in love with a prostitute. He married her, but she destroyed him with her continual string of men. Their daughter Juliette looked exactly like her deceased mother so Jack left her in a convent in France. Eight months ago, Jack killed himself. Now in 1853, Jack¿s solicitor informs Juliette that she inherits her father¿s gold wedding ring and a neglected piece of swamp land with the latter coming in two years when she turns twenty-one or now if she marries.

Accompanying the solicitor is her godfather Max Hollingsworth, who has come to take Juliette home, that is his family home in Baton Rouge. Max plans to ultimately gain control of her neglected estate through the marriage of Juliette to his son Tyler. When Juliette returns to Louisiana she falls in love with Chantz Boudreaux, a mud dauber farmer who lacks the social class level expected of a Brussard. However, contrary to belief and looks, Juliette is a chip off of her dad¿s block willing to risk everything for love.

FEVER is a rich historical romance that emphasizes the era just before the Civil War in the Bayou. The story line is loaded with tidbits, dialogue, and behavior including slave relationships perhaps befitting of the 1850s, but probably will jar sub-genre readers used to a more genteel description of the times. The secondary players add to the feel of being there, but the lead characters, in spite of numerous obstacles to a relationship between them, never rise above the fray so that the novel seems to drift between historical and romance.

FEVER is a not-to-be missed book!

From the moment Chantz and Juliette meet the sexual tension is high. The plot is fast-paced with the many secrets that are waiting to be revealed. The characters and setting came to life as I read this and I finished it within hours. Ms Sutcliffe has a way of enticing readers into wanting more, and I eagerly await her next release. I highly recommend FEVER.
