50 AVERAGE AMERICAN SHORT STORIES
What a disappointing book. I hoped to gain a better knowledge of the American short story and ended up being bored. This is a standard average dull collection. The stories, even by those considered masters, such as Melville or Faulkner are poor choices. Part of the explanation of the deadness of the prose contained in it has to do with the bibliography of the authors in the back. According to that, John Steinbeck, Joseph Mitchell, Carson McCullers, and John Cheever are still alive. This anthology is hopelessly out of date and conservative. If you want a good cross section of American short stories, find it someplace else.
