Clear, simple, but not enough information

'Final Exit' has strengths and weaknesses as a how-to book (this is not a review of its philosophy). The writing is clear, simple, and compassionate. However, its useful information is limited to drug overdose and plastic bag asphyxia. A much more thorough and interesting book on the same subject is Geo Stone's 'Suicide and Attempted Suicide: Methods and Consequences.' I would recommend reading both of them.

    Self-Deliverance Key to Comfort

Mr. Humphry gives an educated, in-depth look at euthanasia. He delves into the various treatments, decisions to make concerning family, options to avoid a hefty legal battle, and other information dire to anyone. "Final Exit" suggests that once a plan has been set in case of terminal illness, the victim will feel more comfortable in their tragic time, even if the plan is not acted upon. Despite criticism, "Final Exit" is not intended for suicical readers looking for a way to kill themselves. It is a method of self-deliverance for the suffering. I would guarantee this informational literature to anyone, ill or stable, in order for them to better understand the pros and cons of a decision they make come to at some point in their lives or the life of someone around them.

    Human Rights

Final Exit provides the reader with alternatives to a hopeless existence of pain and suffering. This book is a must read for every self proclaimed do-gooder bureaucrat and moralist who wishes to force their beliefs on all people.

    A reviewer

My beloved brother used this book as a tool to take his life - sent me a copy with his note.

    Moral Issues

First off, the only reason I bought and read this book was for a final paper that I had to do. I was shocked at the information in the book at exactly how to kill yourself. And how are some of these methods better then others? Another thing that shocked me was it was so easy to get, sure the forward states that if you don't have a termanal illnes to please not use the book. But people that want to kill themselves and do not see any other option are more then likely not going to read and follow it. With going in to the Medical and Psychological arena, I will keep this book as a reminder to make sure my patients do not have to take this step.

    Misinformation, not compassion.

Only people who have never suffered the shock and tragedy of suicide would write the fluff that is in some of these reviews. I've seen first hand the lies of 'self deliverance' and what it does to friends and family in ways that the deceased never could have imagined or would have wanted. Yes, life is hard and it is painful at times, but never to the complicated level of grieving a suicide. Please don't ever think it is the only answer.

    ....

This book is not that great. I had recently lost my best friend to suicide, and she had mentioned in one of the notes she left that she had talked about assisted suicide. I don't agree with this book one bit. There's no excuse for someone wanting to die. There is ALWAYS help, and though it might not seem that way, there is. Don't get this book if you feel depressed. It was a waste of my money. This book tells you there is no way out of depression, and to just get life over with. There's hope, there's always hope. Don't ever listen to someone so vain. But that's just my opinion.
