    Just Finished Last Night

I read this in about three evenings. It held my attention the whole time, though having been in the Navy myself (reserver) it is easy to see how I could be biased. Still, I found it very interesting to see things from the perspective of a fighter pilot. Reading the synopsis on the back of the book, I realize they downplayed the fact that this is a story about an attempt to steal Nuclear weapons off an American aircraft carrier. If I'd known that before starting the book I'd have been very credulous about the story. It turns out that everything flowed pretty well and was essentially believable, so no problems there. I did have a big problem with the ending which will be obvious to those who read the book. Not to give too much away, I couldn't understand why this had to be 'The Final Flight'. With the big letdown ending, I had to lower the # of stars I give the book overall.

    more from this reviewer

An interesting book but a little strange.

I saw the movie "Flight of the Intruder" on the Military Channel's "An Officer and a Movie" and thought perhaps I'd like to read his books. I usually don't like to read books after I've seen the movie so I didn't get "Flight of the Intruder". I didn't realize that I started with "Final Flight" which is the 3rd in the Jake Grafton series. I'm not sure how I missed "The Intruders", the 2nd in the series. Coonts's style is very much like Tom Clancy who does a very good job of explaining a lot of the technical terms and providing background information. Coonts is not as detailed as Clancy which has its upside. It's not as long a read as Clancy but he still presents a good storyline. You have to keep reminding yourself that these "terrorist plot" books are fiction and in some cases a pretty good stretch of reality. I said the book was "a little strange" because, it appears, the lead character, Jake Grafton, is killed off at the end. It's almost like he was intending "FLIGHT OF THE INTRUDER", "THE INTRUDERS" & "FINAL FLIGHT" to be a short mini-series of 3 books. I wonder how Jake Grafton will come back alive in the 4th of the series "The Minotaur".
