    First Night Out for Axiom-man

When I first read the very first installment of Axiom-man, I was excited to continue the series with First Night Out. First Night Out is a very small side-story to the whole Axiom-man saga which details the very first days of Winnipeg's own hero. First Night Out is technically the origin story except that not much really happens in the overall Axiom-man story. This tale is smaller and more intimate as Gabriel Garrison dons the pre-Axiom-man outfit and decides what to do with his newfound powers. There isn't really any further character development from the supporting characters because it' all about Gabriel and his 'first night out' with his new powers. AP keeps the same writing style as before except this time it's scaled down to a very small story. This isn't bad because you get more of the Gabriel Garrison side to things. However, while the simple and scaled down story is entertaining, there isn't a lot going on. To me, this feels more like it should be tacked on to the first book than a stand alone book. With that said, if you liked the first book, you will love First Night Out. To me, my issues were with the actual length of the story, not the content or quality. However, I know that AP has this all planned out and worked out, so I shouldn't really say much here. Though, I feel obligated to let people know that this is a 'beginnings' type story and it's not very long. It's very good, just not very long. First night out is a great companion story to Axiom-man that delivers more backstory on the hero as he starts his soon-to-be epic journey. There are hints and mentions of greater things to come, so First Night Out does do a good job of setting up events from the first book as well as future books to come. All in all, First Night Out boils down to liking Axiom-man. If you like Axiom-man, you're going to love First Night Out. It's not a good book to start the Axiom-man saga with, but it's a good transition to read after the first book. It gives you enough backstory to propel itself forward as an entertaining read, but it's something you really won't get if you read it first in the series. Though it's an origin story, it's best told after the events in the first book to get a better understanding of where Axiom-man came from. If I had to pick three words to sum up First Night Out: Entertaining, fun, and heroic. Stephen J. Semones
