Great stuff!
A real pleasure. I was hesitant to read a prequel to Treasure Island having disliked the sequel to Casablanca, but I should not have had doubts. If you like pirate stories or Treasure Island, then you will love Flint and Silver--even though the title sounds like some alchemic stew.

The author John Drake has a foundation in science which displays nicely in the attention to detail, both of description of physical things as well as to plot continuity and sequencing. He uses his enjoyment of "black powder shooting" to provide a unique event. (No, I won't give it away.)
Perhaps the reader should begin by first reading page 350 "Writing Flint and Silver" in which the author outlines the ways in which he deviated from Stevenson and why. Reading it first will not reduce the enjoyment of the novel.
I would like to have given a 5 rating, but I felt a tangible lack of humor. The parrot provided a perfect opportunity for jest as well as becoming a moral compass. Possibly Mr. Drake felt that humor was indigestible with blood and gore all over the floor. Or maybe piracy is really serious stuff. But I have heard there is humor in Heaven. If there, then why not everywhere? -
Wow
I was a little cautious when I read that there was a prequel to one of my all time favorite books, but wow. It does not clash with the book, and it is a thrilling read. The ending was hard to take, not because it was bad, but because I have to wait for the the sequel "Pieces of Eight". The warning is right however, this is not a book for anyone younger than fifteen (approx.) as it is more sexually graphic.
