The reader follows a young girl as she carries a flower garden home from the grocery store. The rhymed verse accompanies the vibrant, lifelike illustrations that create this feeling. The hard work the girl puts into carrying home and preparing the flower garden for her mother¿s birthday adds to the warmth of this story. The detail and colors used on each page are extraordinary. The technique used by the illustrator gives the reader a sense that they are actually part of the setting. It is as if he or she feels and sees what is pictured on the pages. The illustrations in this book could tell a story on their own. Although the text is short and simple and positively contributes to the book, the illustrations set the theme, plot and mood of the story. This book focuses particularly on the young girl and tells a story from her point of view. As a result, young readers will relate to and find interest in this book. The feelings and thoughts of this little girl are captured exceptionally through her facial expressions and positions. Young children will certainly relate to and appreciate this detail as well. This book tells a beautiful story of an African American family and the love that exists among them. The attractive, colorful, real life illustrations, in addition to the characters and theme of the book, make for a truly unique piece of children¿s literature. Kathryn Hewitt deserves an award for the masterpiece she has created in Eve Bunting¿s book, Flower Garden.
