An inspiring and great WW ll true story. For WW ll historians, this is a must read.

A great WW ll naval action story that I consider one of the best I have read. John Wukovits did a marvelous job putting the story together with extensive research and attention to detail. A very moving story detailing the heroic action of young American sailors in a little known naval action that became one of the major and significant engagements of WW ll. This is truly a book you will not be able to put down. I have an extensive library of WW ll military history books. This is a book I certainly want to read again. Highly recommended.

History at a More Personal Level

Author John Wukovits weaves the memories of the crew throughout the historical background of the short-term life of the the Destroyer Escort, USS Samuel B. Roberts. Launched in early spring and destroyed in a fierce battle in October, we get a first-hand view of what it was like.

This is not a highly technical review of a major historical battle, this is a story that reminds us these WWII Navy veterans were once youthful 18+-year old men, training hard, sowing their wild oats, making friends, living for a day off, missing their loved ones...and suddenly, in one short day, became bonded together in memories of battle, fear and loss.

Thank you, John Wukovits, for sharing their stories.
