Great Romance with a Murder Mystery Twist!

I love it when you're reading a book with a great story and you can 'see' the movie playing in your head. This happened throughout this surprising book. I got it hoping to read an interesting book which happened to be set in my home state. I never imagined that this book would become my new favorite. The romance is intense and passionate. The background story woven throughout is that of a group of childhood friends. It takes me back to my past and current friendships of youth that were (and are) some of the most important & life changing bonds that I've ever experienced but the real surprise is the murder mystery! I read a lot of mysteries and I'm usually pretty good at figuring them out but this plot twist had my mind working overtime. The story is truly brilliant. Lots of great ingredients that add up to one fantastically delicious book. It has something for everyone. Bravo to Carolyn Wilson and her clever creation!!

Only flaw with this book? Too short!

Wilson's characters are crisply drawn, with the depth to allow the reader to get to know them, and to be intrigued by them, quickly. The world of the small Southern town, and the on-stage and behind-the-scenes world of international opera are carefully crafted, making us care about Caroline and her closest friends. Tension becomes anxiety becomes suspense, in this page-turner I found hard to put down. I am hoping we'll get the chance to see more of these players in books to come.

    Small town sex and murder

My kind of story. I didn't know who the real killer was until nearly the end. I like also this writing style--simple, no phony 'literary' stuff. I liked the setting--seems to be Arkansas, but these people are not hicks.

    Surprisingly hard to put down

Truthfully what got me to buy this book was the cover. It reminded me of that part of the Silence of the Lamb series involving Clarice and the opera. And Pavrotti had just recently died. Anyway, I started reading and thought, 'Oh, no, it's chic-lit. Small town girlfriends, yadda yadda.' But it's really an engaging murder mystery more than anything. I read it pretty much cover-to-cover with only a few breaks. Give it a few pages and you'll see what I mean.
