Strengthened my Relationship with my Dog

I bought this book thinking it would help me determine what my dog was feeling or thinking based on body language... it taught me that, and so much more. This was an extremely interesting read, pulling from human and dog psychology, history, genetics, behavioral studies and personal stories of McConnel's. It was an intellectual read beyond just what the book had to say about dogs. Each chapter I'd read I'd sit with my dog and try to think of how her writing compares with my experiences with my dog. She is so spot on. By the end of the book, I found myself "listening" to my dog and our relationship has strengthened in my understanding of his needs. Amazing, AMAZING, book. I have recommended it to every dog owner I know.

If you read one dog book in your life: let it be this one!

The single most important dog book ever written. If you love dogs, this book belongs on your shelf. McConnell describes, citing scientific literature, what many of us have always known, dogs feel and think a lot more like us. If you want to understand your dog, read this book.

Must have for dog owners and breeders!!

This is an intelligent and well written book about dog behavior. Patricia McConnell has a gift for storytelling to illustrate her points. Her knowledge is from a combination of education, research, and her own experience. Her insights are far better than Cesar Milan! She is, in my opinion, one of the best experts in dog behavior. For the sake of dog's everywhere, I hope more people read her books, learn from her knowledge, and adopt her philosophies!!

If yoy have only one book on dogs, this should be it!

Being of a scientific background, but loving my dogs and wanting to understand them in more than a "scientific sense" since I am a voracious book reader for enjoyment, I could not have found a better book to balance the two. With a huge bibliography of sources used and recommended, which include websites for the more 'techy' of us, I know I will return to this book time and again. What a joy to read. I found myself getting upset when I could not reference the pictures referred to "in the middle of the book" when alluding to the different expressions seen to express both human and canine feelings...don't worry, they are on the last pages, and amazingly, they are as clear as described! Everone I know will be bugged by my insisting they read this totally enjoyable book. WHAT A FIND!

When I adopted my puppy from our local Humane Society, I was loaned several books by Ms McConnell...and I quickly gained a respect and appreciation for her depth of knowledge and the ease with which she conveys it to the reader. I immediately ordered my own copies, and also ordered this one. I could not put it down. I have read it and gone back and reread certain sections. Highly, highly recommend it!

    How To Speak Dog

Dr. McConnell takes you into her life with her dogs, and teaches so many valuable things about communicating with your dog. How to 'read' each other. Not just with words, pitch and tone of voice, but with body position and gestures. You also learn what your dog is trying to communicate to you.Best of all her methods work! Both you and your dog will be happier for it.
