The Fortunes of Indigo Skye

Indigo Skye is pretty pleased with her life. She has an amazing boyfriend, she loves being a waitress at the homey neighborhood restaurant, Carrera's, and while her family may not be well off, they sure are filled with love.

While some situations may not be ideal, Indigo knows she will always be supported by those she loves. Whether it is her direct family or her family over at Carrera's (also known as the Irregulars), she knows she always has someone to turn to.

All is good until a new man starts coming into Carrera's. Indigo finds him very strange because he only orders coffee and just stares out the window. One day, Indigo finds a pack of cigarettes in his pocket and tells him off, as she cannot stand a smoker. She thinks she's scared him off until she gets a phone call from her boss telling her the mysterious man left her an envelope.

Indigo is puzzled as to what lays inside, but is sure that it will be disappointing. The contents are anything but disappointing; actually, they are stupendously unbelievable. Enclosed is a check for two-and-a-half million dollars. Indigo is thrilled, but doesn't know much about having money. She is constantly warned that money changes people, but she doesn't think it could ever happen to her.

This was a completely brilliant and amazing book. I fell in love with it from the very first sentence. Not only was the storyline amazing, but all of the characters, not just Indigo, had great personalities. Even the characters that you only met once or twice felt so real that I could automatically tell whether I liked them or not.

Indigo was definitely my favorite character, though. She was extremely sarcastic and witty. There were many, many times that I found myself laughing out loud at comments that Indigo would make or even her actions. What was also so wonderful about the story was its originality. It wasn't your generic rags-to-riches "everyone's rich and happy in the end" story. It was so much more. While Indigo did receive lots of money, she learned more about how to deal with it and become a better person. I felt that Indigo really underwent a change from the beginning of the book to the end, which was really neat.

Deb Caletti's writing was fresh and amazing. Having never read anything of hers before, but having heard good things, I expected a good read, maybe even a great read. Instead I got a stupendous, heartwarming, and hard-to-forget novel. I will definitely be reading many more of her books. I would highly recommend this book to everyone, as it truly was unforgettable. Also, I definitely think that Sarah Dessen fans will love Indigo's story, as well.

The Fortunes of Indigo Skye

In the book The Fortunes of Indigo Skye, Indigo, a successful waitress at a restaurant has everything she could ask for. She lives a happy day to day life with her mom, her twin brother, and her younger sister. She also has a boyfriend named Trevor. Indigo is a waitress at a restaurant called Carrera's. All goes well for a very long time. Suddenly one day a man who drives a Vespa, smokes cigarettes, and comes off to be rich comes into Carrera's. Indigo talks to him about her very negative opinion on smoking and how it will kill you. They name him "The Vespa-Guy". In return for their chat, the "Vespa-Guy" gives her a 250 million dollar tip. This book shows how money can change a person, but not always for the better.
The longer length is well worth the reading because Deb Caletti develops the characters and the length helps to show every little way that they changed. The Fortunes of Indigo Skype appeals mostly to an audience of teenage girls and people who know others who have been changed by money. Throughout the story, Indigo buys unnecessary gifts and luxuries for those who she is close to. This begins to change her in many ways. While those that she loves continue to receive more and more gifts, they notice a change in Indigo's personality and what she values. Her father, who lives in Hawaii to escape everyday worries, played a major role in the important decisions that she later makes in her life. Her father and his way of thinking helps her think things through the way she does and bring her life back to the way it used to be before her suddenly becoming rich. Many people who have won the lottery, rapidly gained a large amount of money, or know people who have, can make a personal connection to Indigo and the changes that she went through. They know how people change and do not realize it until things have slipped away. A very strong point to this book is how the characters are developed. It makes you feel what Indigo is going t rough, but it also lets you know the thoughts of the others characters through dialogue. Deb Caletti uses first person point of view to really get inside Indigo's head ,experience her thoughts and understand the decisions she ends up making to turn her life around.

great book

Great book - loved the unusual characters who were funny and unforgettable. Loved it.

Indigo Skye is your average teenage girl. She has a job waitressing at Carrera's, she has a boyfriend, and she has a best friend. Indigo lives a somewhat chaotic live with her brother Severin and little sister Bex. Her mother works long hours at an office and the family struggles with money. Ever since her father and mother got divorced, her mother has been scatterbrained.

It seems like life is going good for Indigo, she has her friends at Carrera's and is a grade A server. But when a sleek stranger pulls up in his orange coffee and asks for 'just coffee' her life will be changed forever. When the stranger comes back to the restaraunt, Indigo spots a package of ciggarettes peeking out from his coat pocket. With good intentions and information, Indigo lectures him on the dangers of ciggarettes. He gets teary-eyed and claims that people are not sincere anymore and that he could truely tell that Indigo was. He says he just wants to get away from his office and be a basket weaver. Indigo encourages him to do so. With this chain of events, her life is changed forever when an envelope from the Vespa guy himself is left to her. It contains 2.5 million dollars.

Suddenly Indigo finds herself thrust into the world of having money, lots of it. After Richard Howards (Vespa guy) declines the money that Indigo tries to give back, she finds herself with a new image around everyone. There's a flat screen TV in the living room where there was once a 4 inch one. There's musical drills and soap dispensers and the $17 dollar lipstick. Indigo states, "I'll just be me with money." But will this generous gift give her more problems?

Read the book to find out. Deb Caletti puts a fresh twist on a common job in the modern world. She cleverly displays the thoughts of a teenage girl faced with typical and not-so-typical problems. Her writing was a nice change and I'm looking forward to reading her other books!

I loved the relationships that Indigo has with everyone around her. I love her personality. I love this book! I would read a million times over! WORTH YOUR MONEY!
