Foundation Flash Catalyst
'Foundation Flash Catalyst' is the second book I've read about this new Adobe tool. The first one was 'Flash Builder and Flash Catalyst: The new workflow'. The publisher [friends of ED] is a pioneer in books about Flash Platform, that's why is my first choice for the last 5-6 years. Let's dive into the book. Was this review helpful? 1. Analytical presentation of what Flash Catalyst can or can't do.
2. Detailed description with simple words and many images [screen shots] for each process.
3. A sufficient amount of real world examples.
4. Easy to read book for everyone, but especially for the beginners.
5. Really inspires the reader to use Flash Catalyst.
1. The shortest book I've ever read from the Foundation series of friends of ED.
2. Monochrome images [in print version].
If I had to pick a couple of chapters, they would definitely be chapter 4 and chapter 10. Chapter 4 because explains perfectly a rather difficult topic, like Animation in Flash Catalyst. Chapter 10, goes one step further and shows how to import a project from Flash Catalyst into Flash Builder and connect it to live data [XML file].
I recommend this book to every interaction designer [beginner, intermediate, advanced], every developer with design concerns or just a lazy one and definitely to each one of the above, who is member of a working team.

Foundation Flash Catalyst
As the digital information age grows, so do the web sites and the teams that build them. Flash Catalyst gives user interface designers with skills in Illustrator, Photoshop, and Fireworks an opportunity to dive into flash development with out learning any programming. Also being able to pass to engineers a completely functionally user interface, with code, ready for Flex Builder. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. The Foundation Flash Catalyst book covers interactivity for user centric interface design in the first project. Then after you see how easy it is to add buttons and navigation you learn how to add motion to your wireframes. This may sound like not a big deal, but it is much more interesting than saying, "so imagine that when you click this button it goes to this screen". I've seen it happen a lot by artists and engineers.
The Foundation Flash Catalyst shows you how to add all the multimedia items like swfs, video and sound. Learning to do this type of Flash work has been a road avoided by most Photoshop designers up until now.
I recommend this book for all interactive user interface designers. especially those working with a Flex Builder team of engineers.

Great Introduction to a New Software Program
Flash Catalyst is a brand new program from Adobe and with any new program you can either dig around for months and months to find all of the features or you can pick up a book to speed up that process. Foundation Flash Catalyst is a great book to guide through this program. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.
Flash Catalyst is a program that can be used by designers to design great web apps or used by programmers to make their apps look great and this book reaches out to both of these audiences really well. This book does all of this not by making you read technical information but by guiding you with a sample project that you build throughout the book. For me doing something helps me remember it way better then facts and figures. If you learn the same way this book is a must for learning Flash Catalyst.
One of my favorites chapters in the book is "Wire-framing with Catalyst" it shows you how you can use the program to create great interactive wireframes of your project easily.
The chapters following teach you how to add interactive elements to your static photoshop or illustrator files and create a web app. Not only does this book teach you about flash catalyst, I feel that it also provides a great high level introduction to the flex framework and I am eager for the publisher and these authors to write a follow up that leads the user from this program to flash builder.
If you want to learn this great program this is the book to use. Easy to read, informative and it inspired me to use it to create my own web app.

Essential Read! Another Great Title from Friends of Ed.
Flash Catalyst is a fairly recent Adobe product, but has existed previously as the demo "Thermo". Flash Catalyst was designed amongst other things to bridge the gap between designer and developer in the web site production process. Although it is possible to build applications from scratch with Flash Catalyst, its real strength lies in its integration with other tools in the Adobe family of products. Was this review helpful? The book is divided into 10 Chapters and runs to just under 250 pages in length and so is slightly shorter than some of the Friends of Ed titles, several of which can run to 800 or so pages. The text is extremely well presented and accompanied by lots of computer screen shots of Flash Catalyst in use throughout the publication.
I would imagine that this book is aimed for the professional or keen amateur Web Designer/ Developer audience. Flash Catalyst is a fairly new product and to my knowledge there are not too many books available for the software as yet. This being one of the reasons why this book is of particular interest to users of Adobe Flash and other Adobe tools, myself included.
Another title dedicated in part to Flash Catalyst and also published by Friends of Ed is "Flash Builder and Flash Catalyst: The New Workflow". This is another excellent read, but only contains one main chapter specifically about Flash Catalyst and is not intended to be such a dedicated book to the subject as is this one. Foundation Flash Catalyst delves into the details of Flash Catalyst, whereas the chapter in Flash Builder and Flash Catalyst just covers an introduction to basics of the panels and a few pages on building Catalyst applications. Foundation Flash Catalyst is an easier read than Flash Builder and Flash Catalyst: The New Workflow, but I suspect that the two books are aimed at a slightly different audience.
My favourite chapter was Chapter 1, which gently eased me into the rest of the book and the use of the Flash Catalyst software and set me off in good stead for the rest of my journey through the publication. Chapter 2 contains the first step through exercise using the product. This being to take a static design from a Photoshop file and use this to create an interactive prototype. Chapter 3 describes wireframing and then the book moves onto Animation in Flash Catalyst in Chapter 4. Other chapters focus on Interactions, Organising Artwork in Adobe Products and Best Practices, Data Lists and Design Time Data, SWFs, Video & Audio, Custom Components and Library Packages and the book concludes with Flash Catalyst to Flex Builder.
Foundation Flash Catalyst is aimed at Intermediate to Advanced level Designers and offers an introduction to this exciting Adobe Flash tool. The book is aimed for both Designers and Developers using Flash Catalyst to build User Interfaces for Flex applications.
In the last few years I have purchased many of the Friends of Ed titles, as I have been impressed both by the quality of the publications and the content contained within the books and I would definitely recommend Foundation Flash Catalystas a well written introduction to anyone using or considering using this Adobe Flash product in their web design or development careers. Foundation Flash Catalyst will also add a range of new skills to any present or future web professionals CV and improve the interrelation between other Adobe Products.
