McNeff's years in law enforcement, working in the belly of the beast, paid off when writing GOTU and creating his main character, Robin Marlette. Flawed and haunted, as are his teammates, by the fields of war, be they geographical or drug, Marlette doesn't always follow protocol to get the job done, but still comes across as one of the good guys. McNeff makes this evident by pitting Marlette, along with his team, against the real bad guys: corrupt politicians, terrorists, dope smugglers, and kidnappers. McNeff's dialogue in his action scenes is crisp, the settings, detailed, and he never leaves the reader wondering "who's on first?" as he takes you on one nail-biting ride after another, and all the while the clock is ticking the entire time. Was this review helpful?
