A book written with joy and love for the characters protrayed: old friends, indeed, spanning 20-plus years of the author's life; a philosophical musing on Life, Purpose, and Fulfillment clothed in rich and fine garments of Good vs Evil, High Adventure, Heritage and Tradition, Friendship and Love. RA Salvatore's Gauntlgrym will move you, I unabahedly assert, and will bring tears to your eye - tears of joy, of just reward - by the time you finish the epilogue.

I will only add, then say no more - for you should experience this read as a well-earned, joyous discovery much like a certain Dwarf King does when arriving, after a lifetime's faith and questing, at a particular throne room - that you will find humor, comfort, satisfaction, and pleasure in Mr. Salvatore's latest be you a long-time fantasy afficionado or newly come to the genre.

May we all be so blessed, after a long life well-lived, to have the opportunity to say,"I found it, Elf."

NookBook $2 more !?!?!?

Why is the Nook version $2 more than the paperback? Was I mistaken when I thought Ebooks would be cheaper because there's no multiple printings, ink, shipping, etc. involved. I mean, transfer it to digital form, put it on a download server (B&N), and sell it many times over without all the overhead. So, why is it more expensive? Am I being gouged because they know it's becoming a prefered way of reading and they are greedy bastards? Or is there something here I just don't know about. I am a big fan of Salvatore's characters, but, I WILL NOT buy this book until the Nook version is either the same price as the paperback or cheaper (cheaper prefered). Is someone out there listening?!

Blah, not really worth the effort

I wasn't really impressed with this book. Very little in the way of character development or interest. I'm starting to think Salvatore is just phoning these things in now. I've been reading this whole mess from the beginning, but at this point maybe he should just kill Drizz't off and get it over with.

If this book was written by any other author I would have given

If this book was written by any other author I would have given it 3 stars, but it just isn't the same level of storytellling I expect from Salvatore. I really am at a loss for why decades later both main characters act as if they haven't moved on at all from the loss of friends at the end of the Ghost King. They act and think as if it just happened the day before with all the rawness of emotion completely unblunted by the intervening decades. Also Drizzt is a compelling character because of his attitudes of good that contrasted so sharply with those of his family and upbringing. Now all he seems to do is whine and worry about what is really good and what he should do. After all the years he has spent as a force for good in the Realms why is he suddenly so lost as to doing the right thing? I am guessing that Salvatore is getting tired of writing about Drizzt, but that his books still sell so WotC keeps pushing him to write more of them. I think it is time for him to retire the character and let Drizzt return to Icewind Dale and his roots of happiness as Wulfgar did. Salvatore can then move on to creating new characters and telling the great stories he is well known for again.

    Disappointment

Well, all in all this isn't a badly written book it just seems like a rehash of things that have come before only without all the characters we've all come to love. Hopefully the future books will be better.
