There will be diehard Austen fans who will have nothing good to say about this continuation! Ha, yes Ha I say to these gloomy gusses! In the authors notes Elliot has no illusions or desire to copy or capture Austen's unique style. Instead, she writes in diary form and gives voice to the shy sister of Darcy, Georgiana. Be forewarned there is a part deux to this delicious story. We are gloriously dropped back into the Darcy's lives a year after the nuptials. I will say no more except if truly you love Pride ans Prejudice you will do a disservice to yourself and Austen if you do not read.

    Inconsistent

Poorly written and has several errors in the storyline. Not recommendable. I won't trouble myself on finishing this one.

    Dissapointed

I'm a huge fan of all of Jane Austen's books, and was hoping to be able to enjoy some of my favorite characters some more. This book started out very promising. In the beginning there was a concerted effort to keep the language more to that period of time with only a few more contemporary words added here and there. These occasional words would not be so bothersome if it didn't jar you out of the time period and detract from enveloping yourself in the story and characters. Towards the end of the book the 'Austen' language-use is left so far behind to the point that when an old-fashioned word (like "oughtn't" or "ire") is used it jars you again reminding you that this story is supposed to be taking place in 1814, not 1914 or 2014.

I probably still would have rated this work higher even with the language changes had the various subplots not taken such modern twists and turns. Lady Catherine de Bourgh marrying a young fortune hunter? Georigana and one of her suitors calmly discussing his homosexuality during a ball? Georgiana ignoring all decorum to go to the man's room whom she is in love with in the middle of the night in her nightgown and robe?

I feel it is very unfortunate that this promising continuation of beloved classical characters was turned into a modern-day soap opera. The last 50 pages were especially frustrating to read as they did read like a cheap romance novel. Though I won't be reading an more Jane Austen-inspired books by this author I have not given up hope of finding an author to do justice to Austen's beloved characters.
