Ghoulfriends Just Want to Have Fun was exactly half a book, ending on the sort of cliffhanger that is acceptable in a TV series or comic book, where you can expect your audience to tune in next week, next month, or after the summer hiatus, but in an actual published book where a reader expects to read the beginning, middle, and end of the story, it's pretty darned disappointing.

This, like Ghoulfriends Forever, was not a good book. Still, I paid for it, so I stuck with it and read Ghoulfriends Just Want to Have Fun all the way through.

It was better than Ghoulfriends Forever, at least; evidently someone told the author that when readers pick up a Monster High book, they'd like to see some involvement from more than about five of the characters they're familiar with-- so this one actually includes significant and plot-relevant appearances from Frankie, Cleo, Lagoona, Toralei, Jinafire, Skelita, and Spectra, with a few words put in by Clawdeen, Draculaura, Deuce, and HooDude, too. Rochelle, Venus, and Robecca still run the show, and somewhere inbetween Ghoulfriends Forever and Ghoulfriends Just Want to Have Fun, the author does seem to have gotten a little more familiar with the characters...

... But Rochelle is still a rules-lawyer (though her boy-craziness has been tamped down a bit, and she has even randomly broken up with Garrott, so I don't know what happened in Scaris in this continuity), Robecca's out-of-period slang is still in place (and joined by a couple dozen original sayings along the lines of 'the bee's knees,' including 'the oat's goats'), HooDude has gone from a boy a little confused and hurt to be denied what he was made for to stalking Frankie, and Headmistress Bloodgood spends the first three-quarters of the book still being largely ineffectual.

The plot, again, is thin, and if you cross the Monster High TV special Fright On with Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, remove the snakes, the blood, and the references to desegregation, then stop the story exactly halfway through instead of plotting a climax, you have Ghoulfriends Just Want To Have Fun.

And the ethnic-slur vampire sisters show up again. Only three times, instead of five or six times as in the previous book, but I was still hoping the author would never ever use that word or those students again. They don't contribute anything to the plot-- they just show up doing their standard 'don't like to stay put' gag and disappear again.

It's really not worth it for a stereotype and an ethnic slur.

And speaking of stereotypes, something about the way Skelita started half her sentences with 'si, si' bothered me. And Jinafire spouted proverbs in her longest scene. And at one point it's mentioned that oh, hey, it's the Day of the Dead without any kind of explanation of the significance of the holiday.

The few saving graces of the book are, again, the artwork (I want a Dead Tired Rochelle in that puffed-sleeve nightie), Headmistress Bloodgood's Normie Loves Fluffy plan, and the faint hope that we'll finally see production of the Daughter of Arachne doll.

Suffice it to say, even with the cliffhanger, the Ghoulfriends books have lost me. I plan to return them, and to stick with fanfiction from here on out; at least if that makes me cringe or at the writing or word choice or cheap cliffhanger, I can click Back and I won't have wasted any money.
