Engrossing dark fiction

This book is set in Games Workshop's Warhammer universe. It is a story about Gilead, a high elf from an ancient family, who is the last of his line. His life is one tragedy after another, but he still works to fight evil in the world. Actually, that is mostly due to Nithrom, an old retainer of his family's who follows him on his adventures and pulls his rear out of the fire on more than one occasion. Gilead pulls Nithrom rear out of the fire a couple times, too.

Each chapter is its on short story, though together they tell the tale of Gilead and Nithrom's wanderings, looking for other elves. The editing is good, and the pacing of the stories is also good, though not the best I've read. I must say, however, that the last chapter is just about the greatest thing I've ever read. The way that the story is set up, delivered, and finished, is fantastic. Especially the finish. Read it and you'll know what I mean. The subject matter is fairly dark, so it's not for people who like their endings to always be happy. If you like your fantasy with a darker edge, though, this book will rock your world.
