I thought this book was interesting and exciting with how it flowed effortlessly from the present to the past and back again. I thought the history of the two main characters was an amazing story and I was really rooting for them to make it work. However, there were many problems with this book for me. There were two characters whose place in the book made no sense to me. I kept waiting for them to have a purpose - and couldn't find one. There was a lot of emotion in the book but it seemed to be on the surface rather than real emotion. The book was a quick read but I found myself wishing the book would end faster because I wasn't really enjoying the story line or the twists and turns the story was taking.

    Entertaining and a little odd

I actually enjoyed reading this for the most part but as easy and pleasant a read as it was I have to say the plot was just a bit melodramatic. On one hand melodrama is amusing on the other hand it's also implausible and a bit ridiculous. The high points were definitely the long lasting romance between Kat and Riley. The low points were the secondary character dramas.

While Carrie's insanity was always over the top, what was truly insane was her abrupt and mostly inexplicable about face. Her sudden personality switch was immediately followed by Madeline's equally unexpected (and not in a good way) turn to the dark side for the same reason as Carrie and with a similar epiphany. The story could have been better served in playing up the inherent comedy in the situation which only appeared at the end after a heavy focus on the various damaged relationships. There was just a bit too much going on but all the elements might have been brought together with a little less melodrama, a touch more comedy and letting the machinations of the secondary characters either play out fully rather than neutralized with little effect on the plot.
