A very fine debut
The ultra-sweet strains of doo-wop style melodies mix with modern guitar tones and slow but throbbing drumbeats on this Scottish band's introduction to the music industry. The singer sounds terrific as well. There's a very laid-back feel to a few songs, while others have the more energetic, let's-get-pissed attitude. The opener, "Flowers and Football Tops," hesitates to catch your attention because of a lengthy fade-in but its subject matter is heart-rending: a football fan who lost his life due to hooligan violence. "It's My Own Cheating Heart That Makes Me Cry" is incredible from beginning to end: a fearless self-analysis, the singer's recognition that his relationships are screwed up because of his incessant refusal to trust his significant others while he tries endlessly to seduce women. "Go Square Go" has a gleeful ending (if you don't mind the F word repeated many times) and "SAD Light" is a phenomenal climax to the album. "Ice Cream Van" is a slow but very pleasant departure, and if you have the bonus tracks, "Prettiest Thing" is a sugary love song. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
