Great concept, but not a standout...

There are bits and pieces of Grave Witch that are very interesting, but I feel that those bits and pieces are overshadowed by boring details, average dialogue between the characters, and sluggish pacing. Alex Craft is a grave witch who can raise the shades/souls of dead...
There are bits and pieces of Grave Witch that are very interesting, but I feel that those bits and pieces are overshadowed by boring details, average dialogue between the characters, and sluggish pacing. Alex Craft is a grave witch who can raise the shades/souls of dead people. Her skills are needed as part of a police investigation into a string of murders. Finally, a book without vampires and werewolves! It does involve ghosts and fey, however. I have to say, the most interesting chapter was the last one for me, which should not be the case. I agree with other reviewers that some editing and polishing could have turned it from an okay book into a good book. It also took me a few weeks to finish Grave Witch, when it usually takes me no more than a week to finish reading similar books in this genre. The protagonist is somewhat likable. The way the author describes her makes me think of a very "manly" woman with all the beer, one-night-stand, and "zero food in the fridge" comments. Her place reminds me of a bachelor pad :) I would rate this book in the high three star range, and I will continue with the sequel. Easy to put down, but also easy to pick back up!

    A decent read.

This was ok, definitely not a "I can't put it down" type of book.

    Pretty good. Interesting ideas.

I enjoyed the romantic build up and the makeup of this alterative universe, but it wasnt the strongest writing or chharacter development. I neither loved or hated her friends as no emotional connection between them and Alex. Also though I anticipated Death's affection it was thrown into a desperate, out of character weakness. Cute and good for "awws" but not realistic or sustainable. Something that really bothered me is the lack of description on her looks. Curly blonde hair and tall is vague and whereas we're supposed to believe her as a heartbreaker. There are ugly leggy blondes so how can we assume she is so gorgeous. She didnt show too much consistent personality either. Loved her dog, meek sometimes, likes hookups, strong witch abilities. If those issues were worked this would be 5 star material.

    Enjoyable enough

I liked it for the most part. Some of it was interesting and original, but I think the witches/faerie plot is being done to death. You just see so many books that have the same storyline now a days. Still I liked that she could see death and he was a man. That was a new twist. I will probably read the next one.
