    Beware of Abridged Edition

Readers considering purchase of this edition of Great Contemporaries should be aware that it is a reprint of a 1942 edition published in wartime that omitted three essays for political reasons--the ones on Trotsky, Savinkov, and Roosevelt--as well as leaving out parts of the essay on George Bernard Shaw that criticized the Soviet Union. The edition lacks the photographs in earlier editions, and it has no index.

A fuller version of Great Contemporaries, with a new introduction and editorial notes, is in preparation and may appear late in 2010.
