One of the world's greatest writers
This collection captures much of what makes Dostoevsky one of the world's greatest writers, especially "Notes from Underground," which is without doubt a seminal work in western literature and modern consciousness. Many of the themes in his longer works are found here in nascent and/or shorter form: the alienation of the Individual; the dehumanization of modern man; the struggle against materialism; and the affirmation of the importance of human beings and the primacy of free will and choice in the assertion of our humanity. All big words and ideas carrying the potential for outright dismissal as bombast by our jaded (and trivial) modern world view. Serious readers will not be deterred and will find in this book the wisdom and profound intellectual depth of Russia's greatest writer and one of the World's greatest masters of literature. Was this review helpful?
