    Sounds Of Success

It takes a mighty force to be able to withstand the “Sands of Time”. The SOS Band has been able to do this by staying true to the craft of musicianship. Year after year and hit after hit, some reaching as far as the 2 million mark, this groups’ “Sounds Of Success” has proven to be a staple not only within the industry, but also with the fans. This bands 20+ years of accomplishments and musical celebrations is being savored by The Right Stuff Records in the new compilation, most appropriately title, “Greatest Hits”, which is due to drop on August 24th. I caught up with Abdul Ra’oof, one of the lead singers to talk about what this new project means to the group, in terms of accomplishments. “It’s great!” he said. “We have been around for a long time and we’ve been able to accomplish what a lot of groups weren’t able to do. A project like this is a reward for making contributions that we really didn’t even know we were making. We were just doing what felt good and what we loved.” That love is evident when you listen to hits such as Take Your Time (Do it Right), Weekend Girl, Finest, Just Be Good To Me and my all time favorite, High Hopes. Mary Davis, James Earl Jones III, Jason Bryant, Billy Ellis, Sonny Killebrew, John Simpson, Bruno Speight and Abdul Ra’oof collectively made magic over the years that the band recorded together. Since their initial disbandment in 1989, Abdul, Mary & Jason decided to come together to carry the SOS torch by touring within the US as well as abroad. “We are so appreciative of our fan base.” Abdul explained. “It’s really something to do shows and have the fans right there singing along with us. We go over to Europe or Japan and it’s the same thing. Just Love.” What is there not to appreciate about the SOS Band? Great talent they possess. Hot songs they emit and best of all, they are headed back into the studio to create all of that wonderfulness all over again. The band has been approached by a couple of labels and there’s even some talk of a SOS Band, Alexander O’Neal and Cherrelle tour. Talk about a dream come true! I asked Abdul if there were any plans for Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis to work with them on their new project. For those of you that don’t know, Jam & Lewis took production over the group on their fourth album, On The Rise. This album spawned Just Be Good To Me which went to #2 and Tell Me If You Still Care which went to #five. “It would be great to work with Jam and Lewis again.” Abdul shared. “Since the last time we collaborated, they have moved their company to the West Coast. Collaborating and holding on to that formula that got us to this point would be cool.” Top 10 Albums, number one singles, awards, accolades, life long fans and plans to reinvent all of that over again. The SOS Band has accomplished that and a lot more. It’s that kind of staying power that most bands can only dream of having in a lifetime. Not only did the SOS Band dream it, they made it our reality. Celebrate the legacy and contributions of the SOS Band by picking up “Greatest Hits” and by catching one of their live shows in a city near you.
