He forgot himself
Every time I listened to his Story of Philosophy and Lessons of History on the road, I forgot about what's going on at work or in the world, and found inner peace and joy from the wisdom and insights of the great Durant and his peers. You can't afford not to buy and read this one, either!

An outstanding book!
This was one of the first books I ever read by Will Durant, and I found him insightful and amazing. His wide knowledge of world history is evident in the compilation of his lists, which aren't limited to US/European figures or events. A short, easy to read book, it offers the reader a look into this knowledgeable historian's views on the high points of man's cultural trek through the ages. I would recommend it to people who are just starting to learn about history, and to those that already have a thorough knowledge of the subject.

A pleasure to be in the company of Will Durant
It is a great pleasure to be again in the company of Will Durant. His love of the world of the mind and of cultural creation is so great that one feels uplifted in reading him. This is a very short work, and listing a top ten for philosophical influence and poetic greatness seems more a sop to the mass- market mind than a serious enterprise. Nonetheless Durant manages to write about the greats of culture in an insightful and often moving way. There is much to say about the respective lists, but I will only make a complaint in the name of one poet. It seems to me including two English Romantic poets on the list of the all- time ten great is not quite alright. He chose Keats and Shelley whereas I would have chosen a poet who to my mind after Shakespeare is English poetry's greatest gift to the world ,Wordsworth. I think most readers will have similar objections in the name of their favorites and thoroughly enjoy this little gem of a book.
