A treasured book of ours

These tales which stand the test of time have become some of mine and my son's favorites. We love to read folklore from all over the world, but Grimm's are some of the best as far as we can see.

I have read numerous versions of Grimm's Fairy Tales. You can say, I collect different editions of it. This book however, is edited. It isn't as gruesome or gory as some of the versions are. The stories are still good, and have mainly the same plot, but, details are left out. For example, in the Juniper Tree (page 198), the story is supposed to have the little boy being eaten by his father, unknowingly. In this version, he is just buried under the Juniper Tree, instead of just his bones after the father ate the broth. Also, the song the bird sings is different. Maybe it was just a difference in translators. I really don't know. But, it wasn't as satisfying as other versions of this classic collection.

This book is NOT for kids. They are the original stories where all of the disney movies came from. The bright and shiney stories that we know from Disney are not the "real" stories. These are the stories as they were before Disney put them in their inoccent form so don't be surprised if it terrifies you.

Review for Barnes and Noble ed.
In the early 1800's, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm collected German folklore and published it as Children's and Household tales, claiming that the stories were purely German in origin and that they had not been modified by the brothers. Due to complaints of inappropriate (sexual) content for children, the stories underwent several bowdlerizations and modifications by Wilhelm Grimm. This collection is an anonymous translation of one of the later (more child-friendly) editions. This is a long book of folklore, and should not be read by someone who's simply interested in reading some familiar fairy tales. Such people will find this book repetitive and tedious. Those people should probably read one of the shorter books that only has the "best" tales. This book would be interesting to people who are interested in the folklore more than the fairy tales.

    The original stories are great!

This is a great read, going back to the original content of the stories that have been remade countless times like cinderella, snow white, etc.. they are not quite as children oriented as the modern versions but still very imaginative.

IT BROUGHT OUT THE KID IN ME!

The stories in the book are all great and although I keep on reading it again and again. I recommend this book to children so that they can enhance their imaginative, and communication capabilities.
