Oops, she did it again. Joyce Magnin combines the ridiculous with the poignant in a way that spells sublime. And that's especially true of GRISELDA TAKES FLIGHT, the third offering in her Bright's Pond series. No one but Magnin could put together a comatose treasure hunter; his not-so-concerned fiancée; an obsessive pumpkin farmer; two sisters learning to love their way out of dysfunction; and a pilot who makes an emergency landing and decides to stay a while. And no one but Magnin could weave all these and more into a lovable, believable, page-turning story. In what's become her signature style, the author uses flawed characters and awkward, often humorous situations to teach powerful lessons. Griselda Sparrow, who takes flight in not only an airplane but her self-confidence, shows readers the power of truth to set free. And as other Bright's Pond residents work through their own versions of truth-telling, readers will no doubt do the same. At one point in my reading, I realized I was holding my breath. Charlotte Figg, heroine of Magnin's second novel, was about to encounter Griselda and friends for the first time. My concern for my fictional friends defined my discovery about their creator: Oops, she did it again. Read it and smile. Because when GRISELDA TAKES FLIGHT, your heart will, too.

Disappointed
After reading The Prayers of Agnes Sparrow, I was really excited to read Griselda Takes Flight since it is the next in the series. However, I found myself repeatedly confused then disappointed. It felt like this book was written by a totally different author who had n...
After reading The Prayers of Agnes Sparrow, I was really excited to read Griselda Takes Flight since it is the next in the series. However, I found myself repeatedly confused then disappointed. It felt like this book was written by a totally different author who had never read the first book.
Griselda's whole pattern of speech was different in this one, even her personality. Several times in the book she and Agnes had pretty much the same conversation as they had earlier in the book.
In The Prayers, Griselda notes that although she and Zeb graduated together and he was a good looking guy, they had never dated although he had asked her out a couple times but they never made it. In this book, she says they have been a couple off and on since high school.
In the first book one of the main characters was killed by a newcomer to town. No mention is made of this major event. Seems it would have come up with two newcomers in town.
I guess if I hadn't read the first book, maybe this one would have been better but there were too many discrepancies between the two for my liking.

Love this series.
I Love the Bright's Pond series. I got all 4 books for free, so be patient. Love the characters and the humor.

Another Bright;s Pond Story
Bright's Pond books - a place to visit when you want an easy, relaxing read. No stress, no profanity, no really bad situations - just a fun people story about the unremarkable, yet surprisingly engrossing. It's fun to get to know these people and join them in a cup of tea and a great slice of pie.

A pleasant, easy read.
This was a sweet, family friendly story of small town life in Pennsylvania circa approximately 1970's. Some God and Jesus preachiness but not enough to spoil the story and it was a relief to not see obscenities all over the page for once. Watch out for all the food though. Long and tempting, in depth descriptions of food, especially PIE throughout the book could get you drooling or snacking when you are trying to get into that summer bikini.

More Bright's Pond Shenanigans
I somehow started with the last book, so I have to go back and catch up, but assuming you started at the beginning, Griselda Sparrow, Sister to the amazing, over-large Agnes, is suddenly realizing that she's free, and isn't quite sure what to do with that freedom, now that Agnes is in a nursing home, trying to lose some weight. Enter a good-looking pilot with a sick airplane, then a floozie takes up residence, as she awaits her "fiance" to come out of a coma, as he's being treated at the same place Agnes is. There seems to be a mystery brewing. At the same time, it's getting close to the fall festival with the largest pumpkin contest, and Nate is getting psychotic over his pumpkin, Bertha Ann. Griselda learns to fly, the man in the coma is Stella's long-lost brother, and you just have to read the book to get all the fun out of it. A touch of romance, a touch of craziness, a little mystery and a whole lot of small-town nosiness.

Great read in the Brights Pond series!
The characters and storyline are interesting and entertaining. Magnin seems to always put an unexpected twist in her stories. Enjoyable read especially if you jus want to get lost in a story.

I enjoyed this!
Sweet and funny. It reminded me why I don't like living in small towns, but I do like reading about them! Now I want to read the preceding book(s).

Fun read...
I loved Bright's Pond, and I want to go there and meet all the characters who show up in this book. Joyce Magnin is a master at creating situations that will make you laugh out loud. I wish I could have lunch today at the Full Moon Cafe!

Great Series!
This is another in a Bright's Pond series by Joyce Magnin. I didn't want it to end and I can't wait for the next installment.

Another great Bright's Pond book
I love everything about the series, and this book. It's a light-hearted and quick read. You don't have to start with the first book to enjoy this one but I would recommend reading them all!
