I am an herbalist and have used herbs for medicinal purposes for years. I am also a foodie and love to try new tastes in the kitchen. But I have never been able to keep an herb garden healthy. This book gives a solid introduction to get the beginner started in herb gardening. Many of the books I have read on the topic of gardening seem to take for granted that the reader has a base of knowledge already. This book makes no such assumptions. There is a chapter on troubleshooting that answered a lot of questions I have had in the past when I tried to garden. The index of herbs at the back is handy, too. It lists height, spacing, lighting needs, how to plant, and how to use each herb.

Ms. Hixson keeps reminding us to be creative, and this book has inspired me to do things with herbs I had not formerly thought of. She describes medieval knot gardens and the best herbs to plant to achieve that kind of geometric beauty. She also briefly lists ways to make money from gardening, which is something I have wanted to explore for a long time.

This book is a great overview of herb gardening. Ms. Hixson has tried to touch on every subject a novice gardener would need to know to get started, and provides resources for further study. While geared toward beginners, there are also gems here for those with more experience. It was exactly what I was looking for.

    Also Grow Your Wallet!

Growing your own herbs and spices at home is a great way to get the amazing flavor you want for your dishes. I have been looking to add gourmet flavor to our meals without paying for those expensive special spices you find at stores. This book helped me to use easy methods to grow flavorful herbs using simple to understand techniques. Not only did the book give me great advice that led to more flavor in my home cooking, but I have also started a small home venture selling my herbs to people in my community that are interested in home-grown, organic stuff.

    Very Helpful!

My wife & I have been wanting to plant some herbs in our garden for quite some time. We want to use them for spices. But we had so many questions - like what to plant? how to do it organically? what about bugs?, etc. etc. This book really made it easy for us. It gave us detailed information on different kinds of herbs & their characteristics. It discusses many popular herbs used in culinary practice & healing purposes. It also shows us how to design a perfect herb garden & best methods to keep our herbs healthy & strong. Thanks to this book we now harvest fresh basil & parsley straight from our backyard. No more buying dry powders from the stores!

I love to cook and have always wanted to grow a garden with fresh herbs and vegetables. I was pleasantly surprised by this book with the amount of details. Step-by-step instructions on how to grow and care for various herbs were extremely thorough, ranging from soil composition to amount of sunlight needed. I also learned about medicinal uses that I'm excited to try out.

Herbs are wonderful for cooking and medicinal purposes. I have wanted an herb garden for years and was excited to read this book because it included information on herbs that can be grown indoors (helpful for we who live in apartments). Growing Herbs Like A Pro is an excellent resource for learning what and how to grow herbs indoors or out. The book also explains how to care for herbs and even how to make a profit. It's well-written, easy-to-read, and even those who are experienced can learn something from this book.

This is the perfect book for a novice like me. The instructions couldn't be easier. Growing is a breeze. You don't need a green thumb or a knack with this book it is a step by step guide. I now give little herb baggies to friends and neighbors as gifts. And it is just a great overall source of information about growing herbs, herbs themselves, and various uses of herbs.

I found everything I wanted to know about herbs by reading this

I found everything I wanted to know about herbs by reading this book. Which ones grow best inside like lavender and coriander and they can be used for medicinal purposes. St. John’s Wort is used to fight depression, and the herb fennel is used for repelling fleas. In the last chapter, the author gives you the instructions on spacing, sunlight, and their uses. A good, instructional book on herb gardening.
