The PMBOK 3rd edition is not written to serve as the "be all and end all," of "everything project management." To the contrary, it reads as a repository of practices used in project management in general and in the context of key knowledge areas. The general character of the text seems to serve all industries. As such, it has an academic quality some insist is not "real world." That is not true. The PMBOK 3rd edition is very real world. It presents an overview of the tools of the trade available, as applicable, for a broad variety of projects wrapped within the context of nine universal areas of knowledge. It is well written and logical. The process flow diagrams make the concept of project process integration easy to comprehend. It serves as a powerful desk reference on the topic of project management.

You Need to read this to pass the PMP.

I suggest you study some other book on Project Management first (I used Rita Mulcahey's PMP Exam Prep), as this book would be impossible to comprehend without prior understanding of the subject. Then read this book a couple of times. You will do much better on the PMP...

This book is good but to many task and to formal. I wish some of this stuff was written in laymen terms. Overall i thought it was great book and a great learning tool.

Good Reference But Format Could Be Improved

Overall a good collection of project management best practices. However the format is a little dry and could use some livening. Real world project examples of implementation would also be helpful.
