The uncharted territory of adult relationships

Half Share by Nathan Lowell is the continuation of the story of Ishmael Wang, a young man forced into the merchant space service during the Golden Age of the Solar Clippers. In this installment Ish is moving up in rank and moving away from the cozy confines of the galley, and his comfortable friendship with Pip and Cookie, into the environmental section. There, in the dank underbelly of the Lois McKendrick, stale air and dirty water mix with newfound camaraderie and suppressed passions to keep the great ship, and Ish's journey into manhood, alive.

In this, the second book of the series, Ish begins to explore the uncharted territory of adult relationships; some sexual, some asexual, and some that inhabit the strange, often dangerous, space between the two. You see, there are no "bunk bunnies, on the Lois and Ish has to learn that sometimes you can desire a woman that you can't possibly have. That can either drive you crazy or drive you into an intimate friendship that falls just short of going all the way.

Here's a little spoiler. I was a little disappointed to find out that Ish wasn't a virgin. When I first listened to the story I was so put off by this that I stopped the podcast for several days as I mulled this over. However, after this reading I can see where the author actually did us a big favor there. By giving Ish a little history, of teenage romance, he spared us the overdone, and usually overlong, first sex scene with all its associated clumsiness and angst.

If there is anything here that rubs me wrong, it's that Ish may be a little too smooth, too sophisticated, in his seduction of an older, higher ranking, spacer. A little bit more innocence and awkwardness on the young man's part would have been appreciated by this reader.

There is one hedonistic scene in a clothing shop that some might see as is a bit over the top. To those people I would remind you that Ish is only eighteen years old, quite male, and a sailor. Having known a few men who fit that general description in my day, I can say with some authority that Ish isn't half the peacock they were. The scene is also quite amusing, so just deal with it.

On the whole this is a great continuation of the series and a very enjoyable read.

"Sure." He throws off his shirt, showing off a decent physique. He wades in, letting the cool water wash over him. "Ahhh..."

She walked down the beach. Step out on the water. Thats what she had to do. She sucked in a deep breath and took a tentive step out. Where her foot touched the water it turned to ice. She took another step and more ice formed. More confident she walked farther out, then as her exictetment built she began to run. Where ever he touched the water it turned. She jumped and the ice folowed her into the sky makeing a jutout ledge. She cricled back to the ledge and stoped to the edge of it holding her arms out to either side. She felt happy and free. She leaned back and laughed. As cold breeze picked up blowing just hard enough to keep her upright. This was amazing.

Mr. Lowell is very good at telling a compelling story built on the small moments in life.  He has created a full wonderfully detailed universe and I grew attached to the characters that populate it.  I'm working my way through the entire series, I'm now on book 4, and I haven't been disappointed yet.
