Not Merman's best work, but an interesting piece

This work was entirely unknown to me when I purchased it. The musical, starring Ethel Merman and Fernando Lamas, follows the frenetic revelry in Monaco during the week long celebration of the wedding of Grace Kelly to Prince Ranier. Merman and Lamas were paired as love interests for some unfathomable reason. Merman left retirement to take on this musical, and while not Merman's best work she does pack a great deal energy into the performance. As usual, Lamas' cockie attitude pervades the work. The liner notes provide an insight into the off-stage friction between the pair and did nothing the raise my esteem of Lamas. Still the work has great energy and the songs are highly singable. The lyrics are a little clumsy ("If'n" and "Mutual Admiration Society"), but they do leave your toes tapping. Those familiar with Merman will recognize "Gee But Its good to Be Here" which she continued to sign as a signature song through the rest of her career.
