I have owned this book for several years and finally decided to read it. As a lover of both westerns and horror novels I greatly looked foreward to seeing how this book turned out. I have read two other stories by L'Amour and remember likeing them. But I had major issues with this book. The book is filled with paragraphs full of questions, which I don't mind every now and then, but every couple of pages he says the same thing. It was infuriating to turn the page and see yet another paragraph filled with questions. To me when a writer does this its nothing but a space filler because he doesn't know what to write next, and all you are doing is making the book hard to read. Also why did it take Raglan 300 plus pages to get to the other side? If you had a friend in trouble would you really wait 3 or 4 days to try and save him? It seemed to go against the very nature of the main character to do this. Raglan seems to be the type of guy who jumps in there and gets things done. And enough with the reluctant hero stuff, it really isn't good character development to have a guy who takes charge yet at the same time doesn't want to be the hero. It doesn't make much sense to me. But my biggest issue with the book was that it didn't know what kind of book it wanted to be. Was it a modern-day western or a science fiction novel? I don't know and nether did the book. I think that a story can fit in the middle of the two genres and be both and still be a good book. This however is not a good book. I am just sad that I can't give it 0 stars, because that's what it deserves.

    about the mysterious anasazi

Full of mystery and factual history. It will evoke a full time interest in the lives of the Anasazi Indians. Not your usual western.

    Not his usual, but great

L'Amour's use of questions may irritate come people, but I know from personal experience at being lost in the woods - you find yourself asking the same questions over and over out of fear. In his usual style, L'Amour uses actual places and old legends to create the usual thought provoking "What if?...." I read it once years ago and I still remembered the mind-opening suggestions that encourage one to "get out of the box... and think!"

    L'Amour At His Best

Very entertaining western. As always, Louis L'Amour weaves great mystery while educating the reader about an important part of our heritage. I've read every one of his novels several times. Anyone who coined the term, 'never killed a man that didn't need killin' is an absolute master of western lore. I highly recommend this read.

Excellent story portraying the travels of many to an unknown world.

The book was exceptional. There is no other like it. But the real fun is actually staying on the mesa itself. I have done so and believe me there feels like there really is something at every corner. This book deserves to be read to any extent and the adventure only gets greater.

    more from this reviewer

    Highly recommend

As with all L'Amour books, is well written & keeps my interest to the end. Not the first time I've read it, but still like reading it.
