    Everyone should read this book!!

I had heard an interview of Tom Zoellner, the author, on NPR around the time the book came out and had been interested in reading it ever since but kept putting it off. I'm so glad I finally read this!! I had thought it would be more focused on blood diamonds, but it's a great overall history of the diamond trade and our fascination with this stone. Of course, it talks about blood diamonds, and other ethical issues surrounding the mining and processing of the gems, but it also delves into the twisted history of the De Beers behemoth and it's advertising campaigns that have so ingrained in us (Americans most of all) the 'need' for diamonds, especially in the case of engagement and marriage. It's an interesting and entertaining piece, and more importantly, it will make you think and force you to reevaluate how you feel about diamonds, and in particular, their fabricated association w/love.
