Not the best Hellboy collection, but essential for fans

The best story in this collection, hands down, is "Pancakes." It's two pages long, and absolutely perfect. "Box Full of Evil" serves as a nice bit of set up for future events, and has some funny moments of banter between Hellboy and his "cousin." The rest is good, but not quite comparable to other Mignola tales. Overall, the collection is probably best left as a later Hellboy purchase, sort of the "next steps" if you really enjoy the series.

    Another fine Hellboy collection!

The absolute best thing about each Hellboy collection is Mike Mignola's obvious love and passion for his creation. Hearing him speak about why he made this or did that you can just imagine him sitting there smiling the whole time. That's the thing with Hellboy. Although the plots usually involve gross demonic figures, dark stories, and/or death and mayhem they always make me smile. Overall this is another fine collection and a must for any Hellboy fan. Really good stuff!

    A reviewer

If you're new to the graphic novels and want to get a good introduction to Hellboy, this volume and 'The Chained Coffin' are great first-timers. Most of the stories are stand-alones, so you don't have to have read the preceding volumes to get into the story. BTW, 'Pancakes' is hilarious.
