Judith James does it again! Highland Rebel is great fun - a romance and adventure must read!

The story opens on the battle field, seen through the eyes of Jamie Sinclair. Jamie is the sort of romantic hero that is fun to read about. "He'd shifted allegiance and religion so many times he sometimes forgot which side he was on. What with these mad Stuart kings - Protestant one day, Catholic the next - a fellow needed to be quick. Fortunately, he was: quick witted, quick with a sword, and more importantly, quick to recognize which way the wind was blowing. Possessed of a cynic's keen perception and willingness to shift with the political tide, he switched masters, mistresses religions whenever the need arose."

Even with his political astuteness and cynicism, you can sense that Jamie has a deep sense of honor. He is careful when and how to display it. When he chooses to risk his person to protect Catherine Drummond, you can't help but root for him. Fortunately, Judith James isn't one to write a simple love story. There are twists, upsets and adventures - enough to make Highland Rebel much more than the usual historical romance. Many highland romances feature a strong highland warrior protecting his beguiling English wife and Judith Jones gives us something different yet again.

Though set in a completely different place and time, Jamie Sinclair reminded me of Rafael Sabatini's Scaramouche, "He was born with a gift of laughter, and a sense that the world was mad."

    Enjoyed it

It was a fun read and i liked the fact that the female character was her own woman in a time when that was a difficult feat.

    The Rake and the Amazon

I thought this tale had a lot of beautiful twists and turns. All the close-encounters drove me insane, but it was well worth the wait to see these two very different personalities find the truth between them. I loved the main characters and the tumultuous time in which they meet. The read was eloquent and funny. Being a fantasy person, I could wish for a little bit more action, but the dialog and play between the characters was very entertaining. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a historical romance.

    Pleasantly surprised!

From the cover I was expecting something shallow and mildly entertaining enough to fill a few afternoons. This is actually a really good love story, with endearing characters and an interesting plot. It would actually make a very good movie...

    Liked it

I enjoyed this book. The main characters witty banter with one another made me laugh quite a few times. The story is good, and James weaves an intricate story dealing with the Stuart rebellion as well as integrating the fictional characters of Jamie and Catherine. Very interesting story.

Good Characters and a Good Story Line

I very much enjoyed this book. The characters were very relatable, the story line wasn't predictable and I found it hard to put down.

I will read more of hers

Not quite so typical of romance fiction, Judith James writes a delicious story and I will be sure to read more of hers in the future. Thanks B&N for letting me taste her for so little $$$.
