    Hockey

More of a book for people that want to know how to play hockey than if you do play it like me

    Good Hockey Primer

My wife and I have been Hockey followers for the past few years and were looking for a book that would provide us with some more detailed technical info on the sport. We did not read the book from start-to-finish (we skipped sections that were focused on Hockey from the coach's perspective, past great players, etc.) and focused on the things we were particularly interested in. (I.e. We used it as a reference book.) It provides a great bottom-up explanation of all relevant Hockey terms, basic strategy including player roles and responsibilities. We particularly liked the chapter providing a history of the Stanley Cup. The book provides a considerable number of graphics illustrating particular plays and court layout. For all practical purposes these illustrations are useless on the Simple Touch since they are too small to read and cannot be enlarged. We circumvented this problem by installing the book on our Mac where the graphics could be easily read.

    Good, but better for Spectators

The book is typical of all Dummies books - an excellent beginners overview. The book is well written, but not what I expected. It focuses on the history of hockey and the NHL. While great for spectators looking to learn more about what the sport is and what to look for when watching a game, it is not a beginner's guide for the novice player.

I would have preferred more content on how to play hockey, such as general rules and training drills for the game. Some power skating tips would also have been nice.

    more from this reviewer

    Good resource

I have a basic football and basketball mentality, so hockey is foreign to me. This is helping me understand rules and I will definitely re-read the chapter on locating the puck while watching a match on tv! I think that's one of the hardest things about the game-the quick changes on the ice.

Dummy? Not after you read this book!

As a Hockey Fanatic, I enjoy the fast pace of the game, the hits & of course the FIGHTS... who doesn't? But now, A young lady I am wanting to date likes the game, but she just doesn't all of the inside scoop on what is a 2 line pass? Why is checking not always called on every play down the ice? what is a cross check? holding? What in the hell is boarding? Read The Book! I even learned a couple of things myself.. Very good book, read it and you will look more intelligent even if you are bluffing * you guys know who you are
