A story that everyone can relate to no matter what you do or where you're from.
Tracy Kidder has written perhaps the best book that I have ever read. Even Shakespeare would be envious. You must read this book. It is full of real people with real personalities and real issues. It shines with humor as it glooms with heartache. If this book doesn't change the way you look at the world around you - nothing will.

I loved it--couldn't put it down
Tracy Kidder paints a beautiful picture of Northampton, MA, a great place to live. As a native of that area, I am acquainted with Mr. Kidder and know a lot of the people he wrote about, but it was still wonderful. I felt as though I was right there in the cruiser with Tom as he made his rounds.

I Wanted To Move There After Reading This Book
This is a deeply magical and personal story of a city told through it's inhabitants. It was wonderful. The characters were well drawn and I found myself caring about them.

Disappointing
Shallow characters, scattered ideas; mind-numbing repetition. More fun and inspiration can be had from watching a lawn grow.

Enjoyed the book, but...
Enjoyed the book, but found it a bit too scattered. Thought the characters should have been better developed. Nonetheless, kudos to the writer for a great attempt. Think someone should think about doing a live action short film about this book. It could be better than the book. Being a native of Northampton, I miss the old Northampton which WAS (like another reader wrote) the classic American small town!! Years ago, there was hardly anyone you didn't know walking along the streets of Northampton. It was great!! Now you're lucky to see even one person you know. I miss the old 'Hamp.' Yes...Hamp...that's what it will always be to those who lived in Northampton for generations. Never Noho. Noho is in London. NoHo (capital H) is in NYC. One of the things I miss most about Northampton: AFFORDABLE shopping (and able to find most anything you need...not anymore) and restaurants for EVERYONE. I lived in Boston and Los Angeles the past 26 years, so, perhaps, I'm still going through some sort of culture shock. Give me a few more years in the area and perhaps I may feel differently.
