    Ruark's best

I first read a paperback copy of this book as a young Marine on Okinawa in 1966. That book and I parted company somewhere, and I recently purchased the Safari Press version. I enjoy the story today as much as forty years ago. Robert Ruark was a journalist, and knew how to convey what he saw and experienced. This is certainly his best work, in my opinion. Each chapter deals primarily with a particular game animal, along with other interesting details. His description of personal encounters with Cape Buffalo, and his stated desire not to have personal encounters with them, is well worth reading. He honestly writes about his initial lack of skill with rifles, and doesn't portray himself as any kind of hero. His love for Africa comes through clearly. My one problem was with the occasional poor quality of the print on some pages of the book. Page 119 faded like the printer was running out of ink. On other pages, letters or numbers appear distorted. I hope this wasn't some sort of attempt to give the book an 'old fashioned' look. I have really old books, printed beautifully! Aside from that occasional distraction, this is one of the best stories on the real meaning of hunting ever written.

I just love the Book "The Horn of the Hunter" When I first received the book and starting reading , I found myself unable to put it down. I enjoy all books with African interests including hunting, safaris etc. I highly recommend this book.

I would also like to recommend all the books by Peter Hathaway Capstick. They are books that you won't put down until your finished reading them. I have them all and what a great collection.
