This is a beautiful story to share with a young child at bedtime. It's silly and fun to read in a Dr. Seuss-kind-of-way, but also conveys a profound metaphor for life.

For parent struggling to reassure their children after a death in the family, I think this might be the single best resource available. It hits just the right balance between light-hearted goofiness (complete with Jim Carrey-style silly faces) and profound wisdom.

    I give it five stars.

How Roland Rolls, Jim Carrey, Some Kind of Garden Media, 2013, $16.95
How do you introduce young children to the concept of the interconnectedness of all living things? That life is eternal? With actor Jim Carrey’s children’s book, How Roland Rolls, you and your child can spend quality time reading an entertaining story about a wave named Roland that believes that “one day, when he hits the beach, his life will be over.” But Roland finds that he has and always will be part of the larger ocean. Roland comes to the conclusion that death is not the end: “And they saw that together they played a much bigger role — they were in every ice cube between the North and South pole.” With realistic illustrations that children can relate to, you can share an important and vital fact of our times: We are all indeed connected to each other and all things in the universe.

How Roland Rolls is an award-winning children's book by famed funnyman Jim Carrey. It is the story of Roland, a wave in the ocean who loves spending time with his friends. He and his friend Shimmer enjoy being waves but know that once they reach shore, their rollin’ days will be no more. However, once Roland and Shimmer reach the shore and mix together with each other and all of their wave friends, Roland realizes he is not just a wave, but is part of something much bigger. The message is ultimately one of inclusion and is likely to inspire children to consider themselves an important part of the social groups to which they belong.

How Roland Rolls by Jim Carrey is undoubtedly the kind of book children will ask to have read to them again and again. The beautiful illustrations by award-winning illustrator Rob Nason will give children something to marvel at while adults read the Suess-esque rhymes on each page, which are not only entertaining, but provide added support for early readers who are just developing phonemic awareness. Children will be able to easily read this story back to adults, thanks in part to the rhyming words. I also enjoyed the message of the story. Even if children are not mature enough to grasp the concept of human interconnectedness, I can imagine how this book would alleviate loneliness in children with just a little bit of explanation from adults. Overall, the way the text and illustrations weave together the story of how Roland rolls will capture children’s imaginations. They will surely repeat the catchy rhymes as they go through their day, just as many of their parents do after watching one of the author's movies.

As an English teacher who has taught children of all ages I would love to include this book in my classroom and believe other teachers and libraries would feel the same way. How Roland Rolls is clever, expressive, memorable and funny; it is very Jim Carrey.
