    Changed our house.

We were fortunate enough to be in the school district where Dr. Severe taught parenting classes, so we bought the original version, the first time. Now I have grandchildren, so it is time for the next generation to have it. It saved our lives, and that is by no stretch of the imagination. To be able to make changes in one weeks time, and then continue to do so until they try to throw the book away, means it works. They get used to bad behavior just like we do, but it is up to us to show them gently the way to a kinder, gentler home that makes us all happier. You Rock Sal, we still remember classes every week. You should go on the road!

    A great learning tool

My son has ADHD and had been doing theraphy and medication but things were still very stressful aand tense at home and school. His self-estemm was very poor and we were in a cycle of yell/scream to try and get our point across(which wasn't working!!!) I read this book and instantly recognized myself and our family in many of the situations and saw how we were going around in a spiralling circle as a family which was spinning out of control. I wrote myself post-it notes around the house of tips, ideas and phrasings that were used in the book so that I have access to tools when I need them. By myself and husband changing some of our attitudes my son has started to change some of his. Some of the ideas are difficult to use with a child that has ADHD but if we can just bring the stress level down from a 10 to a 4 it seems to help. I would recommend reading this book even just for a reality check because sometimes you are too close to see what the yelling and screaming is doing. My sons self estemm has gone up just by us prasing him and chosing our words a little more carefully(still using the post-its for prompting) which in turn makes him more willing to try to be successful.

    This book does wonders!!!!!!!!!!

This book does wonders. Within a month from when I started reading this book and implementing it I began too see results. It helps you see how your behavior affects your children and their behavior. I am going through the dreadful terrible two's and now my son is not as terrible as he was before I started reading this book. With a liitle more practice and training as well as self discipline I now know that my parenting skills will help my child become a better peron. Thank you Sal Severe you have been extremely helpful and I recommend this to parents of children all ages. I give you my word as a parent THIS WILL HELP!!!!!!!

    Some good ideas....

I own lots of books for parents and this one covers information I've seen everywhere else. It does have some good ideas, but there are also some rigid suggestions that made me uncomfortable. The author's been on Oprah, so I think the book has gotten more press than it deserves.

Sal Severe is speaking from years of experiences assoicated with children from various backgrounds and enviornments plus age range. There will be very few things a thinking parent would argue against. Yes, he said to behave so your children will too, what a novel idea. The book offers solutions and thought provoking procedures to cure almost all demands between parents and children.

    Mixed bag

This is a good book for training a dog. The old-fashioned behavior modification techniques advocated may improve behavior, but may not enhance understanding, trust, or the parent-child relationship. The advice in this book ranges from good (praise good behavior rather than concentrating on bad), to questionable (encourage your children to eat when they're not hungry and to eat as much as you specify to earn dessert) to shocking (if your child won't go to time-out, hold the door shut while he screams, for hours if necessary.) A more understanding and helpful approach for 'difficult' children is outlined in 'The Explosive Child,' by Ross Greene.

    Totally Awesome

This book is totally awesome. It truly makes so much sense and is easy to understand. The examples are clear and both parties (the children and the parents) are both well representated.
