It has to grow on you...
Obviously the radio singles are and will probably be VERTIGO, SOMETIMES YOU CAN'T MAKE IT ON YOUR OWN and possibly ORIGINAL OF THE SPECIES and YAHWEH, but it is my personal belief that this album could have used more Eno/Lanois treatment than Lillywhite. Let's face it, when the band make an album with them (Eno/Lanois), it turns out spectacular (ie. The Unforgettable Fire, The Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby, All That You Can't Leave Behind). HOW TO DISMANTLE AN ATOMIC BOMB will probably have to grow on me. Yes, it does take you back to their early recordings, but it's lacking something to me. It's almost as if the songs could have used more tweaking at the mixing table. Bono's vocals could have used more effects, instead of sounding as if they were recorded through a flat amp. It will definitely take me a few more listenings to develop a better appreciation for it. However, it doesn't have that Ka-Bam from the initial listening that The Joshua Tree or Achtung Baby or All That You Can't Leave Behind have. My thumb's up, but not way up.Was this review helpful?
