You won't be disappointed...a great book!

A book about raising wild turkeys is a good read? Yes! The author's knowledge about nature, his patience and ability to take you there really made this such a good book. It was a selection for our book club and there wasn't a person who didn't truly enjoy it.

An amazing story. The author even says he feels at times more like an anthropologist who is assimilating into turkey society.

To be upfront concerning this review: I am a hunter, and read this book with the primary goal of getting a better understanding of these magnificent birds. That being said, the book was well written and flowed very nicely, with the author adding interesting commentary to his factual observations. Aside from the insight gained concerning turkey behavior, this book solidified the reasons I prefer to spend my time outside.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the natural world we live in.

    A gem of nature writing!

Joe Hutto writes beautifully, and not only about the turkeys that are the main focus of this book; see for example his description of the hooded warbler in his entry for Aug. 18th. His love for his turkeys shines through, and along the way we learn much, enjoyably, not only about turkeys but also about other creatures, Florida, plants, and life.

    Beautiful insights!

Hard to believe that anyone with compassion, love, and respect for animals would want to kill wild turkeys after reading this.

The author has opened many passages to understanding which make any interactions with animals, from your own pets to the ones we only sense
may be there, a whole lot deeper.

It would be good to know if there was ever more contact after the book was written...?
