Kudos for style, not so much for characters.
As soon I hear news a film adaptation of a novel, if the plot sounds intriguing, I have to rush out and read it so I can judge the film. (I'm a snob and I'm okay with that.lol) Shapton's idea was to give her readers a glimpse into the lives her characters through the things they acquired in their relationship and it was certainly a very refreshing way of telling a story; but I felt that the characters were a bit like caricatures in a way. Half of it read like a story with interesting characters and the other half read like some sort of modern day Preppy Handbook. There was a lot of name dropping that took away from the story to me. To be fair, if I were to have an auction right now, it would probably be the same deal, but there are so many other things in everyone's personal inventory that are more important and so much more telling than their high end face creams.

That being said, it is a short read and if you like novel and quirk then this is certainly an interesting novel and a great effort by the author. It's just not something I would actually buy if I had the chance to turn back time.
If you want a really good novel with an engaging shtick, One Day by David Nicholls was awesome! It is also going to be a film soon! -

A charming and offbeat chronicle of a love affair
You need to read the whole catalogue in sequence, to understand the waxing and waning of this love affair. Because there are so many similar objects in my own life, I was particularly touched. The main characters always remain at a slight remove, courtesy of the catalogue fomat. You turn each page wanting to learn more about them. It leaves you wondering how your own life would look if presented in this way.

Learn about relationships the easy way
Learning can be a challenge unless presented in an entertaining manner. Storytelling, whether through the written word or by word-of-mouth, has long been a way to pass on information and history because humans remember stories much more through storytelling than through memorization.

This book teaches about relationships through a unique method of storytelling. It is worth the time and money for any reader. I enjoyed - and learned despite myself - reading this book. -
