Maya Banks has done it again!! This is a fabulous start to a brand new series from this talented author. I enjoyed this book from beginning to end and can't wait for the next installments to release, thank goodness that is back to back in Sept. & October or I may have gone scooters having to wait. One of the things I like most about Maya Banks writing is that she doesn't spend 20 pages explaining one setting or one event drawing it out to the point my eyes glaze over. She keeps a good pace with good dialogue which in turn keeps me entranced until I realize I've read the entire book.
This book is Ewan McCabe & Mairin Stuart's story. He is Laird, eldest of the 3 McCabe brothers and a fierce warrior. She is the illegitimate daughter of the king who's been in hiding since she was a mere child. They are ultimately brought together by his son Crispen (who you just have to love) and initially wed to gain her dowry and lands. As she finds her footing and place within the McCabe clan she frequently causes a ruckus and disobeys her husband. It proves to be quite humorous as she has the habit of speaking out loud the thoughts in her head. Avoiding a ton of spoilers and in turn outlining the entire book I will leave off saying that this is a worthy read that will leave you wanting more!

**I would like to thank Maya Banks for this Advance Reader's Copy it has been a pleasure to read and would happily do so anytime in the future**

I already own this book- written by Julie Garwood!

As I read this book, I kept thinking I had read it before. I had- it's called The Bride by Julie Garwood. Almost everything was the same- though the details that Ms.Garwood wrote about were charming, actually were pretty flat in this book. There were a few difference...

Save your money, and buy The Bride instead.

    more from this reviewer

I really wanted to like this one more than I did. I just couldn'

I really wanted to like this one more than I did. I just couldn't connect with the characters or should I say whats her name... Mairin.

This started out really strong. Mairin is smart, strong and unbendable and has a wonderful and beautiful heart. Then once she meets Ewan McCabe she turns into a helpless and ignorant woman.

One of the most annoying things about Mairin was that she constantly has diarrhea of the mouth. Her internal dialogue was never internal and when people would answer her she would chastise herself and say that shes really needs to stop that.

It seemed like everyone in the McCabe clan was calling Mairin "daft". Well, I really think she was. I get that she needed to establish herself as Mistress but don't threaten to cut a horse in half in an attempt to solve a dispute over a horse. Then fire the stable master. I know what she was doing with the horse but come on, its your first day. You should be trying to make friends and not act like a high and might bossy brat!

Lets not forget the I'm a tough girl but too stupid to know better act. UGG! Okay, let me throw this out to you... I'm paraphrasing here, not quoting... You've just been shot with an arrow and may not realize it right away because of the excitement going on around you and the adrenaline rush. So after you insult your husband and his entire clan you start walking away. With a pain in your side and someone saying you've been shot... You act like nothing is wrong but know you're hurt and then act like your drunk. Its just so ridiculous! You've been shot and its not even that bad and you act like a complete idiot. It's completely unbelievable that she doesn't know whats going on.

Its get worse from here. All Mairin does is go around pissing people off. Of course I'm not excusing Heath's actions but when I read this particular scene all I could see in my head was the Jersey Shore Snookie punch.

The only redeemable part in this book is the last 20%. This was the most exciting but anticlimactic part of the book. This is the only reason why Im giving this book 2.5 stars and rounding up. This part was exciting, suspenseful and Mairin didn't got on my nerves as much.

I know I just ranted bout Mairin but now I'm done with her.

I did LOVE the rest of the characters in the book. I loved Ewan and all his brothers. The entire clan is awesome and I'm looking forward to reading more about them.

Overall, this was just an ok read for me. The sex was lackluster and boring. I found myself daydreaming and didn't go back to reread the scene. I just wanted to get through it. I did really enjoy the ending of the book and all the characters in the book except the heroine. I will continue with this series but maybe at a later date.

    Painful to read

Horrible accents, Mairin does some really stupid stuff and doesn't understand why the laird gets mad at her. most of the character development is on Mairin, only she gets worse not better as a character.

    Good story/writing is terrible

I read the whole thing to find out what happened, but cringed at the writing style.
