    Recommended - Fantastic series!

I've only recently discovered Brian Freeman - I read reviews as well as ed's review. Freeman writes with a lot of intensity, making all his books 'can't put it down' storytelling. loved this one.

    WOW-2 sitting read.

Wow. Just finished IN THE DARK in a 2 night sitting. Loved it. There was a hug double mystery in the storyline that came together at the end. And it was an explosive ending. I saw some of it but not all of it and it had that "cliff-hanger ending." At the beginning the narraitve swings back and forth from past to present. I had to acclumate my self to that. There were several heroines that you like. And the mystery plays into like them more. Can't wait to read another of his books.

    Loved it!

Fast-paced, intriguing read. Lots of twists and turns, but the real gem is the love story within. I would recommend it to anyone!

    Excellent Mystery Read

Mr. Freeman has an excellent grasp of his characters. Primarily Det. Johnathan Stride and his partner (girlfriend)Serena Dial.
A former friend of his wife and her sister, (Laura) iniates an investigation into the death of his sister-in-law, which occurred over 30 years ago.

As the investigation unwraps with all the characters believing the murder of Laura was caused by an indigant black person who long ago fled the city and his whereabouts are unknown, more and more information becomes available which puts several other persons as suspects.

The overall use of clues, personalities, and incidents, leads one on an extraordinary venture. This book is never boring and is hard to put down.
Mr. Freeman spins a great story.

    I Also Recommend:

    Top notch

This is an excellent thriller from Freeman, much in the same style as best-selling crime writer Sam Millar. Freeman has a powerful voice and great feel for characters.

A Good Series Story that Reads Well as a Stand Alone

I didn't realize this novel was part of a series, and only deduced it when the author started providing more background history information on the characters that seemed necessary for the story. However, not having read any of his other books did not present any problem, as this reads very well as a stand alone novel. The author throws in enough twists and turns, revealing bits and pieces about each of the characters so your suspision of "who dunit" is always uncertain. I was totally taken off guard when the real killer was revealed.

    I Also Recommend:

    Good Murder/Suspense Novel

This novel is a great addition to the series. The tie ins with Stride's past makes you think about how much we know about the people closest to us. Brian Freeman came to a mystery book club to speak about one of the earlier books in this series. If you can be sure to go to a signing. Brian gives you good insight into his process and in answering all those questions.

    Freeman Does It Again

Another great book by Brian Freeman. Always his mainstay character's of Johnny Stride, Duluth PD Cop, his girlfriend and ex-Law Vegas cop Serena, and introduces new characters for each story plot. This book brings Stride back to a crime commited while he was graduating from high school. His soon to be wife's sister was murdered. Unsolved case until now, years later, Stide "gits her done." Brian Freeman has a very easy reading style and always the kind of book you want to read in just a couple of days because you want to get to the next chanpter and the next chapter. All of his books are keepers. He investigates his story matter well and he investigates the location of where he is writing so his stories are very life like. Keep 'em coming, Brian.

    An excellent police procedural

Three decades ago in Duluth, then high school students Jonathan Stride and Cindy Starr fell in love. On the Fourth of July holiday, they made love for the first time. However, that joyous occasion is marked by grief and heartache instead of a fond memory of the beginning of their strong relationship; that same night someone brutally murdered Cindy's older sister Laura. The case was never solved with the cops concluding a drifter killed Laura.

In the present, the case remains unresolved, but Laura's best friend Tish Verdure has come home to write a true crime exposé book about the homicide. Tish knows the inner secrets of those who were close to the victim including Cindy, the late wife of police lieutenant Jonathan; who died five years ago from cancer so cannot defend herself from accusations to her stunned husband who was kept IN THE DARK about some of her secrets. Adding to his mental upheaval is Tish has the dirt on his current girlfriend former Las Vegas cop private investigator Serena Dial. Though reeling with revelations, Stride only decides to investigate the cold case murder of his sister-in-law when a witness to the Laura murder attempts suicide.

This excellent police procedural is made brisk and refreshing by the intriguing concept that no matter how much you think you know your loved ones; there remain segments in which you remain IN THE DARK. Thus besides a delightful investigation, the underlying philosophical tone enhances the characterizations especially Jonathan who cannot do his normal strong stride through whatever garbage he must investigate. Brian Freeman will leave his audience pondering what they do not know about their spouse.
