    Truly reflects the challenges today...

Michael Johnston is a talented writer, a balanced author and a teacher who truly cares. His account of his two years teaching is a must read for any teacher. Parents can also benefit from reading this incredible work to learn more about what their children or their children's classmates may face at school. This is an outstanding work that I will read again and again, because each time I know I will gain ever more from doing so.

    Wonderfully Rich

The book is an inspiration to all educators who seek reassurance for meaning in their work. Johnston¿s poetic style artfully describes the struggles of the students he taught and the overwhelming frustrations of a first year teacher in a poor southern community. I highly recommend this book.

    Totally Bogus!!!!

Mr. Johnson's fabrications are just that...fabrications. I was a contemporary of Mr. Johnson's. The vast majority of his musings are totally untrue. This book reminds me of the scene in the movie, The Quick in the Dead, when Gene Hackman's charecter gets tired of Lance Henrickson's character lying and ultimately silences him. I would like to meet Mr. Johnson in open forum to do the same. This book should be placed on the nonfiction list

Tremendous! A must read for Everyone!

This book takes such a tender and insightful look at the children and families at the heart of the American education system it moved me to tears. Johnston has captured the magic and the struggle that teachers know so well, but cant often express. There is so much important work to do in public education, if everyone read this book they would understand that, and would be moved to do something about it!!
