Very good book

This was a very good book that kept your interest throughout. The only criticism I have is that there were some issues that seemed paramount to the story that were never resolved. I hate when authors do that!

The first part of the book is what draws one in. Then the investigation pretty much goes nowhere, or in circles. There is an old mystery and a new one and both seem to be related. The old, and more intersting one, is never really solved. The new one is solved almost like an aside. I came to dislike the self-centered, whining protagonist and felt badly for his partners. I would not recommend this book as a good read.

    I Also Recommend:

    Disappointing!

I agree with many previous reviews, the descriptions were sometimes tedious and excessive. I found Rob, in the end to be whiny and annoying. The basic plot started out intriguing and then there were so many unfinished angles it lost its "thrill". I ended up finishing it only to be disappointed-what did happen "In the woods"? I can't believe we will never know. In an effort to find out, I started her second book, no mention of the woods but I am finding it to be a much better read-Cassie is a great character. Overall this one was very disappointing.

Beautifully written, but Disappointing characters & Key plot point left unanswered

Although beautifully & lyrically written in parts, no likeable characters. As others have noted, one of the two major mysteries is not solved in this book.

    Long and tedious

This book was pretty painful to read. The synopsis sounded so intriguing - what a letdown. The murder case drones on and on (while getting nowhere) as you are forced to read about the unimportant interactions of most of the characters, mainly the detectives. I never ended up caring about any of the characters. Not to mention you never really find out what happened to the main character. Save your $$$ and your time people.

    Pass on this one....

This book was very slow, while 1 part of the story was ok the other (the main reason I read the book) was left totally open and unanswered. I would not recommend....

It took a lot out of me to read this book. I didn't like the main character and the real mystery of the book is never solved. I wanted to like it because it took place in Ireland. That wasn't enough,

I found this book to lose it's way halfway through. I surely could have been reduced by 100 pages without losing the storyline. I

    Good read ultimately disappoints

More red herrings than deli, this book prmises much but delivers little. It is oftennl overwritten, and presents a cast of unlikeable and unbelievaible characters. But a page turner, even if it doesn't really deliver.

    What a let down!!!

I really liked this book...until the end! I know I'm a sucker for things to come to a close and end well. Some reality is OK but this book totally ended as if the author decided to just stop writing this book and someone else finished it with no details, no closure and a big fat let down.

    *SPOILER ALERT*
I am so disappointed, I feel as if I was misled. The back of the book is kind of like a false advertisement, it leads with the more interesting of the two cases, as if that will be the primary case in the book. And then, after 430 very long-winded pages, nothing. Squat. This book could have been 200 pages, at most, and it should have been about Katy Devlin only. I am hoping there will be some sort of sequel to Ryan's childhood story, but even still, the overviews for this book shouldn't have focused so much on the 1984 mystery.

    just kind of bleh...

I definitely was not impressed by this story at all. It took me at least 150 pages to even get to a point where I was interested in what happened next. The only reason I even kept reading was because I hate not finishing stories..even if they are a waste of time. The whole mystery of the main character's childhood experience in the woods is never explained. By reading the summary, it appears that somehow the 1980's disappearances are related to the current case of the 12 year old girl....if there was, I clearly missed it. I'm sure the author plans to write a sequal or something, but I was confused by the fact that it was advertised and yet not addressed in THIS story. I agree with other reviews that it was very wordy and the detailed descriptions are not necessarily needed and do distract the reader from what the author is actually trying to tell. Overall, not impressed but that doesn't mean others wouldn't enjoy it. Obviously it did pretty well amongst other authors and critics...I'm just a simple teacher, not a journalistic scholar.

    meh

Slow and plodding. I was more interested in learning about the 30 year old case than the murder.

The first person narrative and exposition is decent tho a little over bearing, however it quickly becomes extremely heavy handed when the narrator makes straight interjections by breaking down the 4th wall and addressing the reader directly. I really don't need it hammered in to my skull to know when things are important.

    Disappointing!

The main mystery of this book is never solved, and I'm not talking about who killed Peter and Jamie. For me, the most compelling mystery is what is wrong with Rob? Why does he blow up his relationship with Cassie. As Cassie says, "What is going on in his head?" Instead of solving that mystery, the author chooses to take this troubled but sympathetic and likeable character and ruin his life. Why!? It was all so well set up with so much potential for reconciliation and enlightenment, and she takes you nowhere. It's almost vindictive as if Rob is someone out of the author's life whom she hates. Very disappoinnting!

    For now

I downloaded this on Audible a while ago, and maybe it was poor narration/narrator but I just could not get into it. I may try to read it this time.

    terrible ending

I was moderately into this book strictly because of the dual mystery angle. The ending feels like she was tired of writing and didn't bother to pull it together.

    could have been better

It started good, then I found myself skipping paragraphs and pages, too wordy. The story could have been better. I felt teased at the ending. It was disappointing.

    Disappointed

This book is so well written that I became completely invested in the characters. Because of this, I was more interested in the 1984 mystery than in the case the characters were working on. Also, because I liked the characters so much, I wanted the happy ending for them. When the mystery of 1984, which was compelling me to read so frantically, was not solved, and the characters were left abused by the case in the end, I was depressed and disappointed. I'm not sure if I'll read the next one.
